Dalila Is Seriously Ill

Glad Dalila is on the mend, what a stressful day hope you managed to get a good night's sleep.
Dalila has had a good syringe feeding this morning, currently waiting for the videos to upload to flickr to then update the thread with. I did not get a good night sleep but a sleep I am able to function with. I slept on the sofa so I could get up first thing to see how Dalila was and syringe feed her. Hoping when the vet rings that my rabbit Lily is still doing well and can come home (She is with her husbun, so is not alone).

These are clips of Dalila yesterday when the wheezing/noises started.

As you can see her eating was not effected!

Dalila this morning at 7:30 am having a critical care feed in a 1ml old metacam syringe.

It is good that she is keen to take her critical care so readily from the syringe.
It is quite unbelievable how such a small animal can cause so much worry. But it is lovely when they respond to care.

Dalila seems worse to me :(

She's had lots of hands on care today but I think she wheezing and squeaking is getting worse as she breaths. Her heart is beating fast. I'm sat with her now.

I feel completely sick, heart broken seeing my little girly so poorly. She seems to quieten down when sat cuddled to me. So I'll spend the night with her.

Agree with Debbie.

Please get her seen this morning. If she is shutting down it would be kindest to let the vet help her on her way but they can check for fluid etc and go from there.

Oh no poor Dalila. And poor you. I hope you can get her in at the vet this morning, and I hope too that you have managed some sleep. What ever happens remember you have done everything humanly possible for her. x x x

Hi everyone, really sorry for the delayed reply. JC listened to Dalila and actually said she's sounding clearer and that she's looking nice and bright. He also said that its only been two days since she started the antibiotic.

Just me being paranoid as usual but it's a relief to get her checked out. Have to update him tomorrow.

It's always best to check if you're not sure :) Great that she seems to be rallying a bit - come on Dalila! x

Dalila is sounding clearer today, although her overnight output has been quite minimal and small with some stuck together. I can imagine with being poorly and being on so many meds would cause havoc with her tummy. We do have probiotic (Vetark Pro C) and Biolapis in the cupboard. Should I give her this to help encourage her to poo, or will these not help? Also can you give them with a syringe?

Dalila is on:

Metacam: 0.55ml (x2)
Emeprid: 0.75ml (x2)
Septrin: 0.5ml (x2)

Yes, please give her a pinch of one of the probiotics 1-2 hours after each dose of antibiotic. please also try to top her up with syringe feed, little but often. Her output reflects the crisis when not much food has gone in. The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat; that is why it is so important to syringe during the acute crisis.

Where do i put the pinch of probiotics? Also with her meds, I am giving them 1 after the other. Should they be more spaced out? I am just about to go and give another syringe feed, she had some in the early hours and also some veg. She also eats hay straight after having her meds, probably to get rid of all the taste. I weighed her today and she has put on some weight (from what she lost) She is currently around 200 grams under weight but she has been through a lot this past week.

So should I try and aim for 4 x 15ml feeds twice a day?

I add probiotic to the syringe food and that seems to work well. Is she eating anything for herself or needing full supportive care? With piggies who have respiratory issues I tend to syringe feed very slowly and little and often. I wouldn't worry too much about how you give the meds as long as you are giving them.

You can give probiotics sprinkled on a favourite bit of veg or dissolved in 1 ml of water. If you wish, you can also mix it into the syringe feed.

Don't aim for fixed numbers in terms of syringe feeding, but if you can, please space them out over the course of the day and give her as much as she will take each time. make sure that nothing goes down the wrong way (especially important with respiratory piggies). You adjust the frequency of the feeds to how much you can get into her in one go, taking into account how well she is eating on her own.
You can find out more in our guide: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

I would also continue to place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage, to help ease the breathing further. The better she can breathe, the more of an appetite she'll have.

Hi Debbie. She's eating pellets, veggies and hay by herself albeit not as much as usual given everything she has been/going through. So really the syringe feeding is just to top her up and because she is underweight. I am only giving her as much is she will willingly take at a time as the last thing I want is her to aspirate; this is something that is really worrying me. I do it very slowly and do not force any of it, she lets me know when she has had enough. I then put her back, she usually goes straight back to eating something.

You're doing a great job, and I have everything crossed that Dalila will be back to good health really soon xx

Thank you, she has just had 18ml of recovery food with a pinch of Pro C in there. Fingers crossed for a nice pile of poo soon. She also has some thin slices of carrot left in with her. Sometimes she prefers to eat when I am not there. She sounds so much better today, I think the other night when she was really bad was it trying to shift out her system. I spent the whole night with her in the shed going in and out boiling water to then put in a bowl under us while I held her. It has been a week today since her ordeal where she needed decompressing. She is such a fighter, considering she only had a 1 in 5 chance then xx

It's thanks to your complete dedication that she's doing well. I wish you lived closer. Would welcome your dedication here at TEAS xx

Proud piggy parent moment, I have just finished my last rounds for the 'night'. Dalila took a whole 15ml of critical care willingly, it was the supreme recovery version which i added Pro-C to it. She has had 39ml in total of syringe feed in the past 24 hours, she is also eating for herself however with a weakened immune system and being underweight; I am building her back up. She has also gained 57 grams in the past day. I think we are fighting this, I am so proud of my little one. She has been brilliant throughout, a good patient and putting up such a fight.
