Our darling Maisie - the white one (just 5 years old) passed away at the vets on Monday and I can’t get over the guilt. She has had a sebaceous cyst for quite a few weeks which was getting bigger and bigger. It had also become a bit infected so vet (very savvy vet), said it needed to be removed. I took her with her ā€˜sister’ Winnie on Monday and she was happy and eating. He did the op at 9 and they rang me at 12 to say op was successful and she’d come around fine. We went to pick her up at 1.30 and vet said to go home as they were having to give her emergency IV, heat, etc and she’d gone really cold. Unfortunately he tried everything, but she passed away. I feel so awful as she was so well in herself and I wish I’d just left it and given her antibiotics. Her little mate is quiet, so we’re trying to keep her cheerful 😢

I am so sorry you lost Maisie, sending hugs at such a sad time. Please don’t feel guilty, your decision to have the operation was for her welfare and I have made exactly the same decision for my Ginger who had a cyst removed too. You were just very unlucky that she must have had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic I’m so sorry  .

Aww I’m so sorry! You did the right thing by taking the advice of a trusted vet anyone would do the same! So sorry it didn’t end well xx

I agree. You made the decision with the information to had available at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I lost a piggy who was young and fit this week last year. He had a bladder stone. He just had a very bad reaction to the anaesthetic. It happens. Please don’t feel guilty. Take care. ā¤ļø

So sorry - it is awful isn’t it and thank you xx

I'm so sorry.
Please don't feel guilty- you absolutely did the right thing. As you say, the vet was clearly very piggy savvy and wouldn't have performed the operation if he thought it was going to cause harm.
I have been in similar situations with my pigs in the past too, and whatever decision you make you always feel guilty, even though you shouldn't. If it helps at all, remember that guinea pigs don't measure their lives in days and weeks, only in the happy times they've had in life. ā¤

Oh that’s lovely and so true - thank you xx

So sorry for your loss.
Hindsight is wonderful but we make the best decision we can with the information we have at the time.
Please don’t second guess yourself.
You made the best decision out of love for Maisie and you filled her life with love.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve.

Thank you - it’s so difficult xx

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you did the best you could. Some pigs seems to pull through no matter what and others are very fragile or die from no apparent reason. It’s their nature, not your fault and there’s nothing to be gaining from torturing yourself. You don’t know for sure what would have happened if the operation hadn’t gone through. I’m going through something similar; I understand how painful it is, but I hope the happy memories fill up soon all the space and sweep your guilt away.

Oh I’m sorry you’re going through something too - I am trying to think like that, but it’s still raw - thank you xx

Sorry for your loss. You did everything you could for Maisie, so please be gentle with yourself. Sleep tight Maisie x
