just been having a look through google to see what my piggy could be now iv come to the conclusion a while back that he is a peruvian, but wanted to know what his colouring is, i think he is a roan ( he may not be I'm just trying to work it out), now iv read they carry a deadly gene? does this shorten his life expecancy or anythink like that, or will he live a normal happy life? I'm worried now.

I grew up with a succession of healthy peruvians; the oldest of whom lived to nearly ten years old.

no, if he's roan it doesn't hurt him at all (my Bo is roan). It's just that he could pass on the roan gene and if he mated with another pig that also had that gene some of the pups would have serious health problems if they survived at all.

He doesn't look like a roan from that pic, more an agouti?

Roans and Dalmatians carry a 'lethal' gene which means if you breed roan to roan or dal to dal, the babies might be 'lethals' (always white, often born with no eyes / teeth). The parents (roan or dal) are themselves healthy, it's only when they are bred with another of the same genetic makeup

oo so its only if they are bred? well i have no intention of ever breeding him, so does that mean it wouldnt affect him? its only the litters of thoose types of breeds. my minds at rest now lol

Roan piggies have black and white hairs mixed in together. Yours might be a roan but might not. My Moxie is a roan and is fine.

So yeah, roans are fine, don't worry. :)

It's just if you breed two roans together the babies can have very bad health problems.

But your piggy will be fine x x

o thats a relief then, i dont want to breed him, theres enoguh lil piggies in this world that need homes as it is with out bringing more into it. might get him a gf or 2 in the future when iv had him done though
