Hello i am new here but i am seeking for answers. Today i had the experience to watching my own guinea pig die in front of me... but still dont know the reason... well today i decided with my wife to make a haircut to one of our guinea pigs as we usually do cause she was long haired guinea pig and her butt can be a mess with long hair
And well after we finished we let her to the floor and after a couple of seconds she pee and she died... when i realised she is dying i tried CPR and about 4-5 times she was like was breathing again like one big breath each time but no... as long as i tried nothing brought her back... i guess heart attack but why? She was 1.5 years old only :( any ideas what happened?

So sorry for your loss. Don't blame yourself its nothing you did. Guinea pigs are very good at hiding illness as they are prey animals often until it is too late for you to do anything about it.

Sorry for your loss. :agr: With the above comment. I’m sure you did nothing wrong, they are such delicate little creatures

Hi! I am very sorry.

It sounds like your piggy had a heart with a genetic weakness; because of breeding issues this is sadly not quite uncommon in guinea pigs.

The stress from the haircut was obviously enough to trigger acute heart failure or a heart attack. Please do not feel bad or guilty - piggies like yours live with a bomb in their body that has its fuse lit and that can go off any moment. If there isn't anything, then they would have simply gone into acute heart failure one day in the near future right out of the blue or suffered a sudden heart attack. It was just her time. :(

I have lost several youngsters of similar ages this way; one of them at the vets during the examination; others have lost piggies on the way to the vet or in the middle of eating with their mouths still full of food.
It is a very upsetting and frightening experience as right up to that moment when the genetic bomb is going off they are perfectly healthy.

There is one positive; not for those left behind but for your piggy: it is one of the kindest ways to die. While her life was short and her sudden death is leaving you and her mate in shock, she hasn't suffered. Try to take a modicum of consolation from that.

You are welcome to post a tribute to your girl in our Rainbow Bridge section if you wish to. It is there for all those that want to make use of it atany point during or after the end of their acute grieving process, or just to remember a beloved one.

Sorry to hear about this, it must be such a shock , my sister in laws cat died the same way, she was playing with him 1 minute, went out for 2 hours , came back and he was on the floor stone cold. We couldnt believe it, he was only 6. Hope you feel better soon.

Welcome to the forum by the way ☺

I am so so sorry. Don't feel guilty it is nothing you did wrong. A bad heart, will give out at anytime.
Sleep tight little lady, you have passed over the rainbow bridge. Where you can meet others & play & run.
I know it's not what you want to think about but the remaining piggy will need another piggy friend., or she will be very lonely.

I’m very sorry for your loss. An unexpected death always makes us question what we could or should have done differently, but the reality is that sometimes these things just happen and it isn’t anyone’s fault. Be kind to yourselves as you grieve and take the time to remember her as she was at her best.

So sorry for your loss.
I had a piggy die completely unexpectedly too.
It is a shock and sadly there is not always an answer.
As has been said - they are very good at hiding illness until it’s too late.
Be gentle with yourselves as you grieve.
