When I got Dennis out of the hutch this morning I noticed that one of his eyes was red and cloudy. He has had a dose of Metacam cos it looks really painful. (He tried to paw the syringe out of his mouth until he realised it tasted yummy!) The vets doesn't open for another hour and fifteen. As soon as it's 10 o'clock I'll be on the phone making him an appointment for today.

Oh what a pain. Poor Dennis. Well done @Betsy for a quick spot and hope he can get in at the vets quickly today.

Dennis had a seed head in his eye which much to his relief the vet managed to remove with the help of some local anesthetic. Dennis got a coriander reward for being such a brave boy. He has Isathal and Lubrithal drops 3 times a day for a week and a follow up appointment on Monday 20 Jan at 9am.

Thanks everyone. Dennis has an appointment at 11.45 this morning :)

All the best; hopefully it is not too serious and reacts well to the meds! These things always seem to happen on weekends or bank holidays...
Mine prefer to pull them on the morning of a major fundraiser. :mal:

Unless your vet prescribes a lubricant, I would recommend that you get some plain tear gel from a pharmacy and apply it up to 6 times a day (but waiting at least half an hour after any medical drops to all them to be absorbed). This on recommendation from Kim Maddock and from my own experiences with the difference it makes to the healing process/comfort of the eye. Drops will do, but the gel is easier to apply and has a longer lasting effect. ;)

The vet said that the Lubrithal was a lubricant. It's a gel.

Dennis was feeling very sorry for himself this morning :(. The Metacam from last night had clearly worn off. I weighed him (oh dear not good clearly not been eating cos of the pain in his eye), gave him some Metacam and the first dose of eyedrops. He perked up no end when the coriander came out for him being such a brave and good boy. I weighed him again at lunchtime before the 2nd round of eyedrops of the day and he is almost back to normal weight Phew! Poor lad his eye looks so sore.

Glad poor little Dennis is feeling a bit better, nasty hay!

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery, these piggies know how to make us worry.

Dennis's eye doesn't look painful at all now but he has dropped 50g in 5 days :yikes: I gave him his normal weekly check and as far as I could tell everything was OK. When I go back to the vets at 9am this morning for his eye checkup I'll ask for a thorough health check on Dennis. He has been a good boy had his Metacam twice a day and his eyedrops 3 times a day for a week. Obviously something is going on. Dennis is only a tiny boar and hasn't got weight to lose. I'm taking the weight book with me to show the vet. Lets hope it's nothing serious. Will let you know.
