Looks like my little Maple is going to be a dental pig :( just looking for advice on how best to go about things.

She first had issues on February where she had to have her teeth filed right back and she had developed an abscess on her tongue according to the vet. She was every poorly afterwards but made a full recovery. I took her back to vet after 1 week then around 3 weeks after and from what he could see her teeth looked good but obviously he could not see right to the back.

2 months later (2 weeks ago) I noticed she had developed an abscess on her chin although she was eating/behaving normal. Back to vet and another op where they found her teeth had overgrown again and punctured her lower gum! So they have been filed again and we are trying to treat this nasty abscess!

Should I be taking Maple for regular dental checks? GA every time? I am worried that if we fix this abscess that the same thing will happen all over again. She has had 3 anaesthetics in around 3months and she is 5 and a half years old.

All advice appreciated!

I know we always say this but is there any way you can get to Simon? It is a long journey but would be worth getting his opinion. Or if not would your vet be happy to discuss with him?

I so wish I could! I am 500 miles away from Northampton :(
My vet probably would discuss with him (I think he has done it previously for another owner on here) but I don't want to insult him by suggesting he should do this.

What do people do that don't have Simon nearby?

I think some travel, others work with the vet they have. We travel, it takes about 2 hours or more by train and a bit less by car.

How often to you take your dental piggies for dental check ups? Do their teeth need filed every few weeks to save any problems?

We are still working all that out at the moment as their issues keep changing. It is looking like Barley will need filing every 4 to 6 weeks as he has no bottom incisors. We thought Sophie would be the same but she does now have one bottom incisor which the top ones can wear against. Each dental pig is different though.

I'm incredibly lucky and not had a dental pig but Simon is my vet, so I've heard him talk to many pig owners about dental treatment.

He'll assess the situation and then recommend that the pig come back within a certain time. I've heard him say 2 weeks for a serious case, and a month for less. If he can get the issue under control then the visits will slowly become less and less, until hopefully the problem is fixed. But, sometimes the problem will always need to be checked regularly.
