Dental Problems

My poor boy Junior is going to the vets at 4pm today he has broken his top front incisors and cant eat his hay or vegs he has a big gap between his top and bottom incisors when his mouth is closed.
 
Hi! Please grate any veg and place it in the mouth at first. hHnd feed the fibre (with should make up to 80%) of the food intake, as he cannot grip it. Later you can mush up the pellets and cut up the hay when the teeth are halfway grown back.
The good news is that front teeth will grow back pretty quickly again unless the roots have been damaged.

Been there and had the same problem! Chopping up veggies into slim strips or grating them is good so they can get them to their back teeth that do most of the work. If he is struggling with pellets or dried food it can be easier if you make them softer with a bit of warm water....

My lad grew his teeth back in just a few weeks so don't worry. Just monitor his weight to make sure he's getting enough food.
 
well we are back from the vet it isn't a broken incisor its his jaw is moving side to side she thinks its dislocated she took an xray but couldnt find anything .
 
I would go for a second opinion too. He obviously has a problem that needs solving. He can't go on with misaligned teeth as it will affect his rear teeth too and that can be very painful and stop a piggy from eating.

It would be good to monitor his weight so you can check he is getting enough food. If he starts to lose weight then he definitely needs some specialist help to get things sorted out but it'd be good to get him sorted before it got to that stage.

I'm in Glasgow she has referred him to a vets that is more specialised in guinea pig dental and mouth problem he is booked in for Monday 12pm Lawrie vets in Cumbernauld just out side Glasgow.

In the mean time he has recovery feed he can eat his nuggets no bother just takes a bit long with chewing I tried grated veg but he cant hold it in his mouth to bite down its a shame as he is getting frustrated that he cant eat his vegs or hay which he usually loves
Any other ways I can get his vegs into him as he has lost a bit of weight 1460g down to 1060g
 
So the main problem is the picking up of the veg then? If he can eat it once it is in to his mouth then it's worth cutting it up small and poking it into his mouth. Although he is still a fairly decent weight he has lost a lot. How much syringe food are you getting into him? Most dental piggies will take syringe food very well, and you can get at least 30 mls in per sitting. You need to aim for about 120 mls per 24 hours.

We are trying to give him veg like you says but we cant it passed his front teeth we don't want to hurt him
 
He has gone for a sleep now I have him on the sofa with me hes all wrapped up in his little fleecey bed he looked shattered my poor boy x
 
Hi Junior is having trouble eating again his top front incisors are overlapping his bottom ones and they are a bit out infront
 
Is he due back at the vets? did the vet say he would need ongoing dentals?
 
He has an appointment at 6pm tonight with the vet and she has guinea pigs of her own so that's a weight of my shoulders as well x when he was at the vets about 2 weeks ago she couldn't see anything wrong with his teeth and took an xray and couldn't see anything untowards then a few days later he had a miraculous recovery he went back to normal eating like a horse as if nothing had happened and now its back to unable to eat again so I asked for a second opinon from a different vet so he goes there later on.
 
Hopefully this vet will help. If not, is there any way you could get down to Simon Maddock? I know it's a very long way though.

Yes I was thinking that myself ive looked and its a 5 and half hours drive which is not that bad I could get my other half to take us down.

so get the vet to call Simon? ok ill tell her that I'm thinking now I would rather Simon see to his teeth because of the great reviews he gets.

My other half will be in shortly I speak to him nicely lol as hes the driver and try get Junior down to Northhampton this week after his vet has a chat with Simon I just want my boy to be fit again he is getting so upset that he cant pick his vegs up my poor boy x
