My guinea pig Rudie has had a tooth extracted today and the rest filed down. He was given an injection of metacam at the vets after his procedure (@3pm today). How long will this last for please & when should i top up his pain meds - before i go to bed, or in the morning? The vet said 1ml, Rudie weighs 1kg?
Also, he has eaten a bit of lettuce & hay, but i will give him some critical care before going to bed.
Thanks for any help or advice...

Hi and welcome

Please wait until tomorrow with any new metacam! It is too soon to give any new metacam after just 8 hours.
Metacam is prescribed in two strengths, cat metacam (which is newly licensed for guinea pigs) or three times stronger dog metacam
(which is generally the preferred drug of choice by exotics vets and owners and often cited in dosage recommendations).

Can you please double-check before using it, but from the dosage I strongly assume that your vet has given you cat metacam; it corresponds to 0.33 ml of dog metacam, which is a good dosage for a piggy with strong toothache.

Metacam is best given every 12 hours because of the fast metabolism that guinea pigs have. You can give the 1 ml cat metacam safely twice daily if your piggy is in major pain; otherwise split the dosage and give 0.5 ml twice daily. If in doubt, please ask the clinic.

In terms of support feeding, please use your scales (always weigh at the same time in the feeding cycle like first thing in the morning or before feeding dinner) to monitor the food intake, so you know how much to supplement to keep up the weight as much as possible.

All the best!
