Last Friday when I weighed my guinea pigs I realised Rudy had lost some weight. So I kept a close look and noticed he had difficulty eating. On close observation I saw a bottom tooth had broken and the top ones were getting crooked, so I called the vet. I fed him on Oxbow Critical Care until Monday, when the vet said he needed surgery for his teeth, but not to worry as it wasn't a dangerous procedure. He had the surgery on Tuesday, the vet said he had ulcers in his mouth and tongue so that eating again would take some time, but with Metacam, Primperan and Oxbow Critical Care he should be fine. So I brought him home Tuesday evening and begun looking after him.
Wednesday morning I noticed Chestnut had an abcess on her neck. I ring the vets and take her immediately. The vet confirms the abcess and says surgery is required but that it can be a difficult procedure as the abcess is in a highly delicate place. We leave Chestnut at the vets for the surgery and go home to feed Rudy and give him his meds.
In the afternoon we go to the vet to pick up Chestnut. As he suspected he has been unable to remove the whole abcess as it's stuck to her aorta. So she needs F10 ointment for the wound, as the pus will come back, and also metacam and enroflox. Also to feed with critical care if she doesn't start eating.
We go back home and find Rudy collapsed in the middle of the cage. I ring the vet who tells me to take him immediately, which we do, takes me about 4 minutes to get there by car. He suspects aspiration pneumonia. Rudy has an X ray which confirms this and is placed in intensive care, on oxygen, drip and meds. The vet says he is in critical condition and we'll see how the night goes.
Get back home. Chestnut is not eating so I feed her critical care and leave some grass in the cage.
This morning the vet rings. Rudy made it through the night but died at 7 o'clock in the morning. I am devastated. He had surgery which in theory wasn't a risk and he's gone. My beautiful red eyed boy.
Chestnut has nibbled at the grass but now isn't eating. I don't know whether to give her critical care or not. I am second guessing my every move. I am checking the other guinea pigs. I feel like I've let them down. No one else understands. Thanks for reading all of this.

sorry for your loss. you did all you could, please do not feel like you let them down, you did everything in yourpower to take care of Rudy. how is chestnut now? you need to stay strong for her.

Am so very sorry for your loss. You did all you could and you are not to blame at all. It is just very tragic.

I'm so sorry, what a horrible shock for you. Sadly any procedure involving anaesthetic does carry some risks. Really hope Chestnut picks up with her eating, we have a hand feeding guide now in the Caring for an ill pig section should you need it but it sounds like you know what you are doing with syringe feeding.

I would carry on syringe feeding her so that her guts don't shut down.

I am so sorry for your loss of Rudy, what an awful time, please don't blame yourself you did everything you could for Rudy. Please keep the syringe feeding up for Chestnut, let us know how she gets on. Is Chestnut pooing?

BIG HUGS!

I am so sorry that you have lost Rory. Having lost piggies in and after ops myself, I know how gutting it is. Dealing with two major illnesses at a time is very much a nightmare and emotionally and physically very exhausting.

Please start hand feeding Chestnut to make sure that her guts keep going, whatever happens. You may find the tips in our new hand feeding guide helpful: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/complete-hand-feeding-guide.115359/

I'm so sorry to hear about Rudy, it sounds like you did everything you could :( Keeping everything crossed for Chestnut, and Thor and the girls send healing wheeks xx

How horrible for you, keep strong, Chestnut and your other piggies need you. Will be thinking of you at this very trying time. Jenny x

oh no i am sorry for your loss, please don't blame yourself you did everything you could to help. We recently lost a guinea pig she had a heart attack, i was devastated. Just remember you did everything you could, hope Chestnut gets better soon x

Thank you for your support. Chestnut is pooing. I've given her a variety of food and she has nibbled the end of a cucumber and some parsley, not as much as usual, but she is moving around and eating, so I've not given her the critical care. However I am making sure she eats something and if she stops I will syringe feed her. I presume it's ok to give her more cucumber than I would normally.

It is important to keep her hydrated in this weather so extra cucumber and perhaps syringe feeding water - I would also see if she will accept some critical care from you to ensure the guts keep moving - hope she picks up for you - so sad about your little one.

Sorry to hear about Rudy. You'll be emotionally drained especially with the ongoing worry about Chestnut. It's encouraging that she is pooing and I hope things continue to improve for her.

Oh no :( So sorry to hear about your loss, don't ever feel like you've failed your piggies it sounds like you are doing everything in you power to help! I hope Chestnut comes through ok! *hugs*
