Dear all piggy lovers,

My gorgeous OAPiggy Fifi has a clouded eye. It came on suddenly so I was concerned it may have been a scratch or a bit of hay stuck in the eye so took her to the vets.

As she is an older lady I also felt that it may be a cataract, which I know can be a sign of diabetes.

The vet seemed baffled. She was lovely and was so sweet with Fifi even showing the eye to the other vets but they all seemed confused. The eye has no discharge and doesn't seem to bother Fifi who is particularly chilled.
The eye didn't show any sign of injury and reacted to the light unlike the good eye. I did wonder however that maybe it reacted as she couldn't see out of it so wasn't using it to stare out the vet....if that makes sense?

Anyway I rambling but the point is if it is a cataract and she is happy then that's fine and I'm happy if Fifi is but do you think it could be diabetes? How would I tell if this was the underlying reason for the eye problem? I know she may drink more but is this the only obvious symptom?

Any advice/experience would be great.
Thanks guys x x x xoxo

Unexplained weight loss - losing weight despite healthy appetite.
Increased urinating.

The vet should do a urine sample if she has a high presence of glucose - they should then follow this with a pin prick behind the ear to test her blood also for glucose. If both tests are high glucose then it is likely she has diabetes

Thank you for your advice, you're great.

Fifi isn't showing any other signs of diabetes so maybe it is just a sign of getting older bless her.

I think I will just watch her and I'm guessing if she is happy and acting normal then she should be fine?

Thanks x x

One of my piggies, Smartie, developed cloudy eyes a couple of weeks ago. They both developed overnight and one was more obvious than the other but visible in both eyes.

My vet examined her and said they were cataracts .... most likely congenital (hope thats the right word but just in her genes). She will be 2 years old in February. I have her 2 sisters and they are okay (at the moment). They all have the same diet and she shows no other symptoms of any illness apart from the cataracts. She doesnt seem in any way disadvantaged by having them and is her usual self.

Not really sure why I am saying all this but just thought I would add my cataract experience so far... Hope Fifi is going to be okay
