Digitalis/foxglove poisoning.

We have two boars who have eaten some foxglove and are very poorly. We're nursing them as best we can (syringing in mushed up food and water which they take) and they're still here 48 hours later so there's still hope for them. Does anyone know how long the effects last? Will they gradually recover or is it kinder to get them put to sleep? :...
 
Welcome to the forum Apig, sorry to hear your two boys have been poisoned.

Did you adminster any charcoal as soon as you realised, to soak up as much of the toxin as possible? Are the boys on any other medications? What are their actual symptoms at the moment?
 
Digitalis/Foxglove

No we haven't given them charcol, didn't realise what it was until several hours after the event.

At the moment they're lying flat out as if they're dozing but they can't seem to co-ordinate their movements and are all sort of limp but they can move about a bit if they want to but only by scrabbling, can't really stand up properly. They can eat if the food is right beside their mouths or if you syringe it in which makes me think they might recover as if a pig is really ill they just give up.
 
Have they been to a vet, they will be able to phone the poison unit and they will be able to give either give a prognosis or a antidote.
 
i've just noticed this thread. PLEASE get in touch with your vet asap. they may or may not be able to do anything against the digitalis itself after this long, but they will be able to advise you how to deal with the potential complications.
