i have one boar who is the most highly-strung pig Ive every known! very vocal (which i love) very dominant but very beautiful.
he was born November 2006 and initially i put him in with a little ginger pig of the same age although not related but he kept harassing him, chewing his fur, constantly challenging for dominance even though the other pig is a very submissive type. as he was still a baby i tried putting him in a huge indoor cage with the little ginger pig and an older pig hoping for things to be better but he just kept annoying them and chewed both of their fur off the older pig loves the little ginger pig and they now live very happily together in an outdoor hutch but this poor fella is living on his own.
i thought perhaps he was full of teenage hormones and thought about introducing him to a new friend when hes past adolescence but he's now a mature 8 month old but i don't think his character has changed.
is it cruel to let him live on his own? would it be more cruel to put a baby pig in with him and hope that he would be nice to it? i don't know what to do for the best.
Hugo is a handsome pig. have you tried putting a partiction down the middle of a cage and putting another pig the other side , he won't be on his own and he won't chew or nibble anyone
I have decided he is just too dominant to ever be bonded with another boar! He has been living on his own for about 2 months now and he is loving it! I thought maybe he was just too old to popcorn, or couldnt be bothered! But since he's been alone thats all he ever does! 98) :smitten: ;D He has a whole cage to himself, lots of toys, and gets the mst attention! ;D
I dont think I will ever try to bond him with another boar, no matter the age...we may get him neutered to put in with 2 girlfriends, or he will live on his own!
Its upto you, you know his character and I dont think its worth trying to bond him if you know its not going to work! have faith in your decision! O0
I have several single boars and they are all really happy pigs.
Hormones mean that some boars will never be happy sharing their living space and so I respect that and let my louts live in their very own batchelor pads in the same room as my other piggies so they can communicate with the others but not have to share.
My 2 tamest, cheekiest pigs are single boars and I wouldn't change them for the world!
awww, thanks for the replies i feel more reassured now, i didn't realise that other people had problem boars like him.
other problem with him when i put him out in the run he's desperate to get at the other pigs gnawing on the run, making alot of commotion. if i put him too close to the others they start squabbling because he's rumblestrutting and intimidating them : so now i put his run next to the rabbits but he can still see the other pigs but he's not close enough to cause trouble
I'm glad all my other pigs aren't like him! flipping heck it would be pandemonium he's got more character than all the others (8) put together!
you count to 10, and just scream ;D i have a pig like yours with major attitude and boy does he head butt to get out of the cage, when you put your hand up to stop him, he pushes it down with his foot.... hes very funny and full of character.
he was sharing with 2 others but picked on one that much i had to remove the poor Piggy and then he started on his other cage mate. he's a bit calmer now but i can see him ending up on his own
i have two boars on their own, they use to share but cause one got ill i had to split them, they seem happy but need and demand alot of attention and expect to always be out of their cage, they are very spoilt.
some piggies like their own company and i think you just have to try things out and you'll beable to tell if he's happy.
