Hello everyone,

After wandering around the forum, I decided to remove the hay rack as I was too afraid it would not be safe. I have been trying to find a way to get my guinea pigs to play in the hay, so I put it in a litter box lined with hemp litter (I will change it for fleece as soon as I can). I put the hay directly on top and change everything once a day. I wanted to know if it was safe for them knowing they do their business directly in the hay? Wouldn't they eat dirty hay?

Thanks

All of my boys are the same. I waste quite a bit of hay during clean outs, but I don't mind as they really do need to have huge hay piles and ad-lib supply. Mine use the hay as much for burrowing, weeing and pooping as they do eating!

They won’t eat if they don’t want to, but it won’t harm them if they do. I just throw fresh hay on top a few times a day and they spend hours within their piles of hay!

I'm relieved because they seem so happy with this. I waste some hay too maybe less with a peepad underneath but it's not a big deal

They eat their own poop - and each others - so I wouldn't worry too much. I have two pairs and if, when cleaning, I accidentally drop some poopy hay from one of the enclosures into the other the recipients come out quite excited for a good sniff and rummage through. It must be like getting a newspaper delivered with lots of interesting news in!
