took piggy to vet as had lost weight and poo a bit loose. Vet thought he had a spur on back tooth so had a dental. vet then said he had lung disease as breathing laboured under anaesthetic. When got him home realised he had trouble picking up food and then saw bottom incisors loose. took him back to vets who said his bottom teeth cracked. syringe fed him but took him back to vets as going on holiday and they now say he has dislocated jaw. He can eat grass but will find it hard to syringe feed him lots as work full time. Think vet must have done this to the poor little chap. Any ideas anyone?

I am in Westerham in Kent, sorry have not got round to updating profile

That's ok.

Are you able to get to Northampton at all? The best dental vet in the country is based there - Simon Maddock. Debbie's sanctuary is also in Northampton and she takes in pigs temporarily to enable them to get treatment from Simon. I know she has a lot of pigs in at the moment so it is best to wait for her to comment.

Also there is a group on Facebook called The Piggy Train which is a network of people who can transport pigs across the country to get the veterinary attention they need. All trains so far have been to Simon.

In the meantime, here is our hand feeding guide:

Is he on any pain relief?

got your reply on mobile. he is on metacam, getting to Northampton not easy, will check out the hand feeding guide

Have you checked our vet locator (may not be easy on mobile), as there may be an exotic vet near you. How experienced with pigs was the vet you saw?

it was Trinity vets in Maidstone who is exotic vet and recommended on the GP forum, that's why I took him there

In which case I would speak to them as soon as you can and explain the situation, I have heard good things about them and would hope that it is not the vet who has caused this. They may be able to keep him in and hand feed him for you.

I have lost count of the number of piggies who have come here, supposedly with a dislocated jaw. In every single case, it hasn't been the jaw that has been dislocated but an issue with the very back teeth being overgrown and forcing the jaw out of alignment.

This little guy arrived for a temporary stay at TEAS with his teeth so out of alignment that his bottom incisors lined up with his eye. He had had dental treatment, costing a lot of money, only days before at an exotics vet. After just one dental by Simon, he was able to eat and his jaw started to come back into alignment.

I would be willing to offer your piggy a temporary place here at the sanctuary to enable him to have supportive care offered by myself and appropriate dental treatment from Simon Maddock. 108.webp 108.webp

Sorry for late reply. If I can just give you a bit of background, the piggy Morgan was eating OK but seemed to have lost some weight and poo a bit loose but not diarrhoea. As we were due to go away for a couple of days thought I should take him to the vet. Chose Trinity vets in Maidstone as recommended on GP website. Vet thought his back molar had spur and took him for GA and op. When I picked him up he said his teeth actually OK but breathing laboured under anaesthetic though fine when awake. X ray showed grey areas and said he had respiratory disease.
He was given Baytril and Karidox antibiotic When I got him home realised he couldn't pick up food and thought his mouth just sore. same next day and then realised bottom incisors seemed loose.
Took him back and vet said he had cracked bottom teeth and top had broken off though not all of the tooth. Syringe fed him for a week but took him back for a week while we went on holiday as worried he wouldn't eat enough. Rang in the week and they said he was OK but when I picked him up yesterday they said his jaw had dislocated and the tendons and ligaments now weak so hard for him to eat but bottom teeth Ok now.
prognosis not good as they reckoned even with syringe feeding he was continuing to loose weight though when I weighed him yesterday he had not lost too much on my scales at home.
He can eat grass if it is cut and can nibble on small pieces of lettuce and greens. has got a bit iffy about the syringe feeding but will persevere. As you can imagine I am at a loss to know how this could have happened other than with the anaesthetic procedure breaking teeth and dislocating jaw.
It would be difficult for me to get to Northampton as we live in Kent and I work fulltime.
According to the vet his teeth are OK but now very confused as to what is the best way forward, any ideas?
many thanks
Sally

If you are on Facebook have a look at The Piggy Train page, as it is possible that a piggy train could be organised from Kent to Debbie in Northampton. There is also a thread on here about it which I will try to link to in a moment.

If you think given what I have said you could help him, please let me know and will see if I can organise something on the Piggy Train
thanks
Sally

Hopefully Debbie will be on later and can answer your question but the Piggy Train is waiting in the wings to get something organised if so. I have added you to the group and a post is being put up to see what volunteers are available.

Oh so kind of you, thanks! He is a 2 1/2 year old unneutered boar as is his cage mate, who is getting fatter while I tempt the poorly one, guess they would have to go together for bonding purposes?

OK thanks, will see if the transport works out
thanks
Sally

I've put in a request for volunteers on The Piggy Train f/b group so that if it is needed we'll hopefully have members on standby ready to roll.

annoying has have just come back on Friday from York so had I known could have taken him there on the way up

Simon really is the most brilliant vet out there, I am sure he will be able to find out what is actually wrong & help to sort it out :)

Yes lets hope so! Thanks for your kind thoughts

Door- to - door transport to TEAS from Westerham has now been offered for tuesday at your convenience
Please keep him going with syringe feeding in the interim and let us know best time Tues for pick-up.

Hi Stewart Hoping to collect my 2 from Debbie this week, either wed, Thursday or Friday, please contact me through this as I don't get facebook on my phone or e mail if anyone needs a lift from Kent to TEAS
best wishes
Sally

Thanks Sally, I'll log your details & pm you before Wednesday if any help is required.

What amazing people, this world would be such a better place if more people were as kind and quick to help others out when they are in need. I think the piggy train is a fab idea :)
