the are getting wee / hay stuck in it if i do need to cut it any scissors for recommendation

Most people on here with long haired guineas give them at least a partial trim regularly, to stop the hair dragging and picking up bits of stuff or getting matted.

There is a guide to help you here: An Illustrated Guide to Hair Cutting
Somebody else should be able to recommend suitable scissors etc.

I agree with the above. If it compromises their welfare then it must be trimmed. In the warmer summer months when there are flies around, dirty hair can collect debris and lead to fly strike (myiasis). This is where certain species of fly lay their eggs on the animal and the maggots that hatch will eat into the flesh of the living animal. Having dealt with it in sheep, I can honestly say it is one of the most horrific things I’ve ever seen.

I have never had a properly long haired guinea pig, however I have done some regular bum hair trimming on lazy boars. A pair of hairdressing scissors worked really well for me as they are very sharp and fine so cut quickly and accurately, reducing the chance of injury.

I have a long-haired pig and mainly trim around the bum area (otherwise it gets dirty) and trim the sides to keep the fur from trailing on the ground. I may give her a good trim all over in the summer too to keep her cool, although I've been leaving the top parts long in the winter because it's so pretty and she doesn't seem to mind. I just use human hair-cutting scissors (I actually used to use them on me... I guess now I need to buy a new pair for human use!) She really hates hair trims so it's a bit challenging, one of my kids holds her around the middle with all feet off the ground to keep her from running away or jumping around and poking her eyes with the scissors!

This is Misa in all her glory when we spread the sides out... you can see the back is short because that's the part we cut a lot off from. It grows just as long as the sides if we don't!

I have a long haired piggy. I cut the hair around his legs and bottom short all the time so nothing drags on the floor. He is given an all over haircut in summer to keep him cool

Omg she is beautiful🎉

I have 2 long haired piggies. They both get a trim round their bums and the other back legs. Bramble has a groom every morning cos her fur gets tangled really easily as its quite coarse - she is a Texel and Misty gets a groom once a week as her fur is nice a silky and doest tend to tangle much - she is a Sheltie.

I love the looks of the long haired furtadoes.I 🤣🤣just admire them in other people’s photos
I always really wanted a sheltie until we got Misa (I know she had some long-haired genes but didn't realize she would have the full sheltie coat that she has.) Now I realize that they are gorgeous but they are WORK! LOL! It would help if Misa was more cooperative. She's really feisty and she doesn't like coat care and makes it very clear that she like it!

How did you get her to sit still for this photo?

When we first got Brin we thought he was an Abyssinian, you can see why:

It didn’t take long for all his fur to grow in though…

We tend to cut his fur before the summer to keep him cool and in early autumn, so that he isn’t shocked by the extra cold, and it has time to grow in before winter.
And just whenever else it needs it so that he doesn’t get his lovely fur matted or dirty.

Brin’s cage-mate Seiji has a short coat, but has a weird little skirt on his rear that only needs cut occasionally.
I’m not sure whether you can see it in this picture?

Does she nip or keep turning? 🤣They are beautiful looking though.
She's not nippy, but she will keep jumping to turn the scissors like she wants to face off, which is just not that safe for her eyes! Getting her trimmed is really a 2-person job because you need all four feet off the ground or else she's really erratic/unpredictable in her movements. I've had other sheltie crosses who were a lot calmer about getting their fur trimmed, Misa is just kind of generally a lot!

She actually seems to like when we spread all her hair out! LOL! I do it all the time when I'm holding her and she'll lay down for it. She's generally really feisty and doesn't put up with stuff she doesn't enjoy but this seems to relax her! She's only difficult about it when the brush and/or scissors come out!

Misa is a Diva🎉She knows she is beautiful🤣

She really is! We always say she has a big personality, with the caveat that 'personality' is value neutral and we're not saying it's good, just that there's a lot of it!
She's hilarious, honestly, she will shove us with her head if she wants us to move and she goes pretty much where she wants (she will 'visit' everyone on the couch... when she's done with one person she will move down and crawl onto the next person, whether they want her to or not!) I really adore her. I love all my pigs, but every now and then one comes along that is just special and Misa is just my special girl.

They're precious! I love Brin's bedhead and Seiji's little tuft!
