Well, We have just been away for the weekend and as usual my neighbour fed our piggies while we were gone. Just got home and as I was walking down the steps to see them in the shed I could hear them doing their usual high pitched squeek as they heard me. However, as soon as I opened their hutch to stroke them and say hello they ran off in to their bedroom before reappearing for a stroke. Is it just my 2 that do this? Also, does anyone know what the high pitch squeek really is? They also do it at feeding time and when they are running around on the kitchen floor and I leave the room.

Guinea pigs are prey animals so they will run away until they get to know you. :)

The high pitched squeak is there way of saying feed me mum! I have one that is so high pitched it's almost like a whistling kettle!

They will come around. I found talking to them like babies are help, well it works for my boys, my girls never look impressed and think I'm, crazy! :D

One of my girls runs away from me all the time - unless I am hand feeding them veg treats but even then she's very cautious. Its funny because when I'm home I leave the cage open so that they can come and go as they please from the cage and she is the one that is always running about - so she's just kidding on that she's shy! They always do that high wheeking when I go to their cage with food/hay for the rack. :smitten:

Patches is very skiddish around me, and Chewy is a bit but I expect this from Chewy as he is new.. I have had Patches for about a month and she still runs from me whenever I try to pick her up and she never really makes any loud noise*(Until yesterday when I picked her up and she smelt Chewy, then it was almost ear piercing..) And Chewy wheeks very loudly when he is petted in his special place on his back O0

Connie runs away from me more than Eliza but her previous owner who had her before I adopted her said that she's been like this since she had her. She's sometimes very nervous and makes it difficult to get her out of her hutch. She burys herself in hay and just generally makes it difficult to catch her. Does anyone have any tips on trying to catch her easier without hurting her or stressing her out too much? When she has been caught, she is so cute and even sits on my knee to watch tv. Eliza is much easier to catch :o

I've found that if I put one their cardboard tunnels into the cage Daisy will go into it so that I can lift her up that way - she's quite happy. She hates me picking her up with my hands. O0

They do make you feel unloved sometimes don't they?!?

We went away for 2 weeks, left them in the very capable hands with the 'grandparents'. I was SO excited about seeing them again. Them? They just hid in their pigloos and chubes for the first 2 days! Chuh! Thankfully they are not back to normal and sqeaking like mad every time i walk past the hutch..

I think thats just life as a piggie parent! They are natually scared animals...as frustrating as it is to us!

i do everything for the girls, clean them, groom them, feed them etc and yet they adore the OH me they run from :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: but as long as they are happy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: try talking to your piggies when in cage and when you catch them offer them their favourite foods and just be patient. good luck! hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

My youngest two boys (7weeks) don't squeak! Well one does but its complicated so here I go trying to explain!
Lennon will squeak voilently (I mean its quite scary!) when I hold him to the point where he look aggressive, but Harrison doesn't squeak at all, unlike Ozzy (7months) who always squeaks for food etc, am I being to hard on Lennon? Is he actually showing affection, and telling me he is happy when he squeaks like that or am I making him cross by cuddling him?
Harrsion loves cuddles much more happy to be picked up thean Lennon but just won't squeak at all, do you think he will squeak one day? Thanks Maria

maria, some piggies don't squeak and some hate cuddles. they are only babies and i don't know how long you have had them for but give them time to get use to you and their new surroundings. they will soon get use to you, have them in a room where you are in a lot and talk to them so they get use to your voice. and when you have them out have some of their favourite foods to offer as treats they will them associate food with cuddles and will start to look forward to it. perhaps as babies they weren't handled alot. wishing you luck and welcom to the forums from me and the girls in oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

i am away most weekends :( but my mum looks after the boys then, but the boys and i spend most evenings together during the week, they are fine with me.

they tell me off when i get home from abandoning them (ooppss) the boys took a while to warm to me, even now they're not as confident as my previous piggy...but i've only had them 3 months, they'll settle down eventually.

Mine have the high pitched squeak when they hear the rustling of a plastic bag....that must be food for them, or so they think.

Bad luck if I'm just bringing out the rubbish or the nappy bags....LOL

I left mine in capable hand for three weeks whilst on a holiday and I can tell you they know the hand that feeds them. All my girls were stressed to the max and had mites when I came back. They would not look at me for a couple of days as to say "How dare you left us!" but now all is back to normal and they are racing to who is the first at the hutch door.

That's piggies for you!
