I have two boy piggies about 3 1/2 months old - they're indoor piggies but enjoy our lawn during the day...

DH brought them in this evening using the pigloo to carry them but they've got rather soggy mucky bums as they tend to use it as a loo when outdoors rolleyes and he didn't realise... They've not got anything stuck to them but both have grubby fur and I don't really want to leave them like that but OTOH I don't want to traumatise them either!

Should I bath them and how and what with!

Thanks

Steph

gorgeous guinea do lovely shampoos that rinse out really easily but obviously its over internet so have to wait for it to be delivered.

personally i wouldn't bath a piggy that young, i'd use a dmap cloth on the wet/dirty patch then dry, less traumatic for them to.

Oh ok should they be over 6months before we try this kinda thing? I don't want them getting cold or anything...

They seem happy despite the dirt today ;) might try the wetflannel thing instead :)

I use a damp washer during the winter months with my girls if they have mucky butts.... but i do use the hair dryer. Try the hair dryer, keep it on LOW and not too close, i always have my hand in front of the dryer and flick their hair that way if it seems to be getting at all warm you can feel it straight away.
Bet they had loads of fun on the grass drool

With regard to age, they are technically old enough to be bathed but I personally would avoid it for a while if you can get away with just using a wet flannel to spot clean (on the one hand to save their super sensitive skin but also to save them any potential stress of a bath....bathing can be stressful for pigs but they usually get used to it in time so don't worry too much about that!) Lots of people do a "bum clean" in between baths, just cleaning dirty bums rather than shampooing all over.

I have shampoo'd a pig around the same age as yours. When we brought him home we found that he was crawling with lice so I had to bathe him straight away. He didn't like it much but was completely fine afterwards!

As already mentioned, Gorgeous Guineas is highly recommended for natural, gentle and safe skincare products designed especially for piggies:

If you do want to shampoo now you could perhaps get a trial size of their extra gentle "Mini-Pig" baby shampoo for their first bath (although technically their other shampoos can be used from 12wks+):

Just going back to what you said about your pigloo....if it's one of the ones which has a base on it then I'd think about changing to one of the 'bottomless' types which pigs love just as much but help keep their bums a bit drier/cleaner.

Good luck! :)

I can give you an endorsing thumbs up for the Deodorising Shampoo by Byotrol. It has an anti-bacterial agent and usually keeps our two smelling really fresh for at least a couple of weeks. Their hair is nice and smooth and silky afterwards too :) You can get it in most pet shops :)

If you feel they need a bath then I would stick to plain luke warm water just on their bottoms. But a damp flannel would be much better.

GPs do not need bathing unless they are filthy - they have natural oils in their coats that do a good enough job on their own. And when baths are needed, it is usually a water only bath that is needed.

I've had a diabetic Peruvian (diabetes = frequent urine issues so frequent wet bottom) and she had 2 shampoo baths in 4 years, most the time shampoos really aren't necessary unless for a medical issue or once every 6 months - a year.

Gorgeous Guineas do have a mini pig shampoo escpecially designed for piggies 12weeks and under.
