Just a quick question, as I recently introduced my neutered boar to my sows I'm keeping my eyes wide open for any signs of pregnancy, just in case!
I read on a website that once a sow is pregnant the normal behavior she shows when in season, like rumblstrutting etc, doesnt happen because shes not really going through the same monthly cycle. Also because she is pregnant she doesnt want to mate, so doesnt do any of the pre mating things like rumbling?

Does this make sense to anyone else? Obviously you cant take it as a sure sign that a pig is or isnt pregnant, but maybe its just abit a clue?

A pregnant sow doesn't come into season, obviously. If you see your boy rumbling, chasing etc. his girls every two weeks you know that they are not pregnant.

Girls with a courting boar usually display strictly female behaviour (lots of squeaking, peeing, running away, but never far) and usually only rumblestrut for a short display of dominance with another girl or (rarely) give off a very short rumble to send an annoying boy packing!

However, some girls do not have strong seasons, and a boy will pick up on that and react accordingly. However, with a new boar around, girls tend to react more strongly than they will do eventually.

Gloria has always had strong seasons, she rumbles around for a couple of days, and even mounted Moe one time!

They are doing all the female stuff you said about like peeing and squeaking, and JP is still chasing them and trying his best to mount them, that could just be because hes only been in there a week so he's still trying really hard. But I know that Gloria should be in season again around next weekend (we know when hers are because of her strong behavior during it) so I will keep a good eye on what goes on.

I never knew guinea pig dynamics could be so complicated. They really are wonderfully interesting creatures :D

I loves them so much :D

The danger zone was any girl coming into season withing the first days/week of being with your neutered boar. The more time passes, the safer he is.
After four weeks after the op, you must be very unlucky to be caught out. After six weeks you can be sure not to be caught out.

A pregnant girl will not give off the pheromones that tell a boy that she is coming into season and therefore not spark his special interest.

Well Gloria had just finished, the couple of days before the introduction she was doing her usual routine. When they first met on the neutral ground she was more perceptive to his advances as she had only just come out of season, she didnt let him mount but she kinda chased his bum haha Once they were in the cage though she was having none of it! I would be highly surprised if he managed to catch her. Unfortunately we dont know when Moe is in season as she shows no signs at all, she also has had none of his advances, she pee's on him and everything.

I just want to be aware of any potential signs so that I can pick up on anything as quick as possible.
Despite not waiting 6 weeks, I do have my pigs best interests at heart :)

You will probably get some fireworks from Gloria when she comes into season. Hopefully, you'll see Mo coming inot season this week.

Some sows can come into season when they are pregnant. I had it with a sow who was a rescue, obviously pregnant but kept comming into season, which lead me to start wundering if it wasnt babies but something nasty ie tumors, so I asked someone I knew who has looked into guinea pig biology very much and has a great intrest in the workings of a guineas body and they really suprised me by sayying that sows have the ablibitly to carry 2 seperate litters at once! as they have 2 uterits(sorry cant spel and done know what the correct term is for 2 uturs) In the 30 odd years they have had guineas they have heard only a handfull of times when a sow has littered and then a few days or weeks later another baby suddenly apears in the litter.
I havent really looked in depth to this my self but would like to as it was something that did really shock me and does sound slighlty impossible but obviously it is possible, would be nice to find out if all sows have an extra utrus or just the odd few.

An extra uterus can only be very rare! Normally, guinea pigs have only one, like all animals.

Oh god I dont need anything else to worry about!

Very interesting to think about though ;)

ok so think what I was told was right and Ive looked through the Guinea Pig lopidia in the reproduction section and think this little sentance explains how sows can carry 2 litters at once;
"The uterus consists of 2 tube like structures, the cornua. Each cornua has its own cervix" Basically each cornua can carry a litter but it is very rare that they carry 2 seprate litters at once. Hope that make sense!

I'm not sure if this has to do with Gloria's seasons or not but I didnt want to start anbother thread.

Gloria and JP have started fighting last night and this morning. No blood has been drawn, but they have leapt into the air and collided a couple of times! In firness after a couple of hair-raising minutes of teeth chattering and rumbling they go back to all sitting nicely and eating hay, like sitting right next to each other.

But these mid air collisions look really nasty! Jp rolled around all over the place this morning, but he got straight up and was fine.

I think Glroai is reluctant to let JP take over. SHe is a very dominant sow.

We are going to bath them tonight to hopefully help them bond.
