If anyone here currently has, or has had a Guinea Pig with a diagnosed heart problem, can you please tell me more about it? Such as; what were the symptoms, how it was diagnosed, what treatment you were given, and also if that treatment was effective. I'm just curious to hear what other people have experienced, many thanks to anyone that shares their story! :)

@helen105281

My own piggies that showed at least three symptoms from the heart piggy list turned out to not be heart piggies at all and didn't react to heart meds while those that turned out to be heart piggies didn't exactly show symptoms.
So it is not quite as easy and straight forward! It is also worth keeping in mind that like with humans there are different things that can be wrong with the heart. There is not just one heart disease and that's it. It is also a lot harder to diagnose for a vet than you might think.

Do you know how common heart problems are in Guinea Pigs?

Yes I lost my old girl a few weeks back, she was diagnosed last October with heart failure, hers was caused by a mass growing in her chest. I noticed her breathing was more rapid & pronounced at first & she started losing weight. Some experience hooting in their heart piggies, but mine never had that. Usually they have to have a conscious x ray to diagnose it.

I'm sorry for your loss :( My old girl Cookie used to hoot a lot, the vet thought asthma and gave her a ventolin inhaler which didn't help, she later went for surgery to have a mammary tumour removed and they did an xray of her heart whilst she was under GA and found it enlarged, sadly Cookie's heart failed when they brought her off GA and she passed away, most likely because of this heart problem we didn't know about. Since then I've been very interested in heart problems with Guinea Pigs. I have two that regularly hoot (one is very overweight) and another one that has a clicking chest all the time with heavy breathing, she also can't wheek, so 3/8 of my pigs I suspect a heart problem, all of them are having conscious heart/lung xrays soon so I want to prepare myself and find out as much as possible about it. Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing, URI's have been ruled out so we're looking at the heart before putting it down to allergies.

I am out for the day with family but will come back on tonight once home.

I had a heart pig, my old boar Boris (my avatar)! He was perfectly fine for the majority of his life, but started looking a bit skinny for no particular reason, still had a good appetite and such. He started breathing funny so I took him to my local vet who diagnosed him with a URI, and gave him some antibiotics but obviously these did nothing as his problem wasn't a URI, it was a heart problem.

He had a fair amount of conscious x-rays taken (vets didn't want to put him under due to the breathing problems), and then an ECG at a specialist vets, who confirmed that he had Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

He was put on a diuretic, and two heart meds, Vetmedin and Fortekor, which he had twice daily for all. He did manage to have a good few months after his diagnosis where he was happy, just skinny looking. His breathing did improve on the meds, but he had a heart attack and sadly passed away in September 2016. The vet was surprised that Boris had managed to last that long, as his heart was the largest he'd ever seen in a guinea pig, he had a particularly severe problem unfortunately.

He did show a few signs during his earlier years that I'd never added up before, like making noises when eating (assumed they were happy munching noises).

Hope this helps x

I currently have 3 heart pigs though I had 7 at one stage. All are on Nelio which is a brand of Benazapril and diuretics when needed. For one of them I am looking at adding in Vetmedin.

I have been advised that the following are symptoms to look out for:

Heavy sleep
Weight loss/failure to thrive
Hooting sometimes followed by a cough, though this is not always heart related
Abdominal bloating as they suck in air
Bumblefoot
Blue tinge to nose and lips
Rapid breathing
Nodding when breathing

One of my girls was diagnosed with a heart condition, where it looked like her heart was enlarged, but we think it may have been fluid collecting around it. Her symptoms were weight loss, nodding of the head when breathing and lethargy. She was treated with vetmedin, which improved her symptoms hugely, to the point where she came off the meds. Unfortunately she had a sudden relapse and died, but we had 9 more months with her, when the vet warned us she may not last the week.
