Hey,

I took my guinea pigs out form the cage and realised that the female one has something in the 'anus' area.. (see photo below). My first thoughts were that she's impacted but I wasn't sure. I rushed to the vet who tried to squeeze and clean it together with the nurse.

However, at the end said that he was quite worried about it as there is no rectal hole and the all thing is abnormal. He prescribed Metacam together with Enrobactin because it might be grow in her rectal thingy or whatever and infection.... Now we need to wait until Monday/Tuesday and see if it's works...

When I came back home with her I realised that actually it's not her anus :O ( I compared to with the other guinea pig). What is it? I'm shocked.

Is the other pig a boar? Could it be boar glue?

What happened when the vet squeezed it? Was it coming out of a hole? If so it might be an abscess or cyst, which will need antibiotics.

I'd take her to another vet tomorrow so she can be dealt with before they close over the weekend.
 
@Jaycey Yes, the other one is castrated male.
The vet took her out of the room, squeezed and clean it (apparently)..but when I squeezed at home the white sticky thing was coming out. She received an antibiotic called ENROBACTIN. Am I right that it's not her anus? He should knows that..

yess! That must be grease gland! I haven't realised that they've got something like that. Does anyone have experience with it?
 
It’s often more noticeable in male piggies but to me it looks like it could be infected, or possibly a cyst?
The antibiotics should clear it right up however if you’re at all unsure get back in touch with your vet :)

That's another form of the standard medicine known as Baytril @F&G. From the angle of the photo i'd say it's more likely to be her grease gland rather than her anus, it's too high up. Can you see it if you look at her from underneath?
 
Will the antibiotics help? What do you think about applying medical manuka honey on it?
 
Certainly looks like a grease gland infection. The antibiotics should help and keeping it clean. I can't advise on the honey for guinea pigs, though I have used it for dogs and horses.
 
Keep her on the antibiotics and pain meds. I would advise ringing around all the vets in Edinburgh seeing which ones have experience with Guinea pigs.

When I had a medical problem with the other piggy, they saved him. I think I need to book an appointment with the other vet..
Its too fat away to FiFE..

Today it looks like that (photo below) can't really clean it so I just pray that the antibiotic will help..

It’s so raw around the edges I wonder if she has been chewing at it.

It does look much better now the gunk is gone but from the size of that I would guess it may take a while to heal. Make sure to go back to your vets if there are any signs of it getting worse or if you run out of the prescribed medication.

I’d actually pop an email to the vet with the picture and ask them if they feel they need to have another look now that it’s cleaner or just to carry on treating what they gave.
 
Today's situation. Do you think I should try to squeeze it or soak it?

I'd probably soak it @F&G. Thay could loosen it and it come out on it's own. You could try to work it out when it's wet and give it a clean out. Do you have anything to clean it with?

Do you have another appointment booked for a check up at the vet?
 
But i don't know soak it and clean it. Yes, I booked it for Tuesday.
 
@F&G Sorry I don't know what you mean. You don't know how to soak and/or clean it?

If you're unsure then it would be best to leave it and if possible bring forward your vet visit to tomorrow to see if they can assess it and show you how to deal with it if they think it needs to be cleaned.
 
Hey there guys! Just a wee concern that I have, I bought a 6 week old piggy 2 weeks back and she seems to have a lot of crust on top of her eye and has lost hair as well in the area what should i do about it?

:wel: Hi there, I think your little one has a fungal infection, maybe ringworm. She needs to see the vet for a proper diagnosis and the right treatment, over the counter stuff won't do the trick I'm afraid.

To me it looks like a cyst that is refilling. I wouldn't squeeze it as you will cause her discomfort. If it is a cyst then the capsule causing the pus needs to be removed to stop it from filling up all the time. You'll know the difference between an abscess and a cyst from the smell, I nearly passed out in the vets having an abscess drained because it smelt THAT bad :))

I know that one @Lady Kelly I still remember the smell of the abscess that burst in the hutch (abscess came up over night) of my Rainbow Piggie Lenny :vom:
