I have one male guinea pig named Dexter and for a few months he has been living on his own due to fighting with the other male guinea pigs who have unfortunately had to be rehomed because I am too ill to look after them anymore. Dexter is very well looked after and I love him very much. Recently I had to look after someone else’s female guinea pig and I placed her cage against his. They really enjoyed each others company and would be nose to nose at the bars and it was the happiest I had ever seen him. So I was wondering if maybe he might benefit from having a female friend?

Is he neutered? If so then that's a great idea. Would you be able to manage the two?

If he's not neutered then it might be worth getting that done, then waiting the 6 weeks after his op and then looking at rescues for single females and they can help you bond them :)

Thank you for your reply. He isn’t neutered but I could look into to getting that done or adopting an already spayed female. I didn’t know that rescues can help you bond them, that would be very helpful. I will be able to look after them well and I think sows are supposed to be much cleaner than boys :)

Spayed females are a very very rare find unfortunately.

A neutered boar and sow are a good combination. When I was left with a lone boar that’s what I did. It worked well. Hope you can find a nice companion for Dexter.
Sorry that you’re not well and hope you recover quickly

Neutering Dexter and rescuing a sow (after a 6 weeks post-op wait) is probably the best way forward for you. That is if you are well enough to look after 2 piggies.

Unfortunately spaying a female is pretty risky so is one done if absolutely necessary for medical reasons so they're incredibly rare. Neutering for boys is far less risky so that'd be your best option, I have a neutered boy myself :)

Our 3 sows are gorgeous but I’m afraid they’re not as clean as our late boar used to be. They’re much more messy. Xx

Oh really? I've found that having 4 girls was MUCH cleaner before adding my neutered boy. He's stinky and kicks poos everywhere :))

Thank you everyone for the brilliant advice, I will be looking into getting Dexter neutered so hopefully he can have a lady friend haha :)
