So I just got my guinea pig nugget yesterday,It's my first guinea pig so I was wondering if hoovering near the cage would terribly frighten him, what should I do?

They do get used to noises and you going about your business but it takes time for them to settle in. For the first few days when I got my two, I was very careful about keeping not too quiet but not doing anything that would suddenly scare them. Perhaps start it a distance away and then slowly move closer so you can gauge his reaction and stop if it frightens him.
Please do consider getting a friend for your piggy. Guinea pigs should not be kept alone.

Ok thank You,and the rescue I got him from told me he had been bullied by other guinea pigs so he is scared of them, thus meaning he has to live on his own x

I am new to the world of guinea pig keeping too - I waited a week before hoovering the room they are in. They were scared but they all lived! I tried talking to them whilst I was doing it and timing it so that it was their vegetable tea time straight after, so they got a sort of reward for having to put up with the scary loud noise.

I think it depends on the pig to be honest! I can hoover right next to my William and he goes about his business as usual whereas my Angus just about jumps out of his skin whenever I turn it on even if it’s nowhere near him lol.

Welcome to the forum

I hoover around mine and they do get accustomed to the noise. Like @Helen82 I usually hoover when I’ve finished cleaning the cage and they’re all busy stuffing themselves.

Which rescue did he come from?

Please let us see pictures of Nugget

I'm so glad to see this question because it's exactly what I wanted to ask! I've had my two piggies for 8 days now and haven't hoovered because i'm scared of terrifying them, but I badly need to. I'll try hoovering outside the room at first and see how they react to that before I come too close!

Piggies do get used to day to day household noises. I now work in the room in which our piggies live and they go about their business as normal even with my phone ringing, Teams call taking place and the radio playing away in the background. Funny though that should i cough or sneeze they all run for cover. :)

One of my skinnies actually loves the handheld hoover i use in their cage and comes out to climb over it, she is generally a bit odd though. 😀

Welcome :)

they will get used to it. My boys are not phased at all by the hoover, washing machine etc. once they realise that certain noises are not a threat to them, they will be fine :)

First of all your piggies will run for cover this is quite normal. I have a garden vac in my garage that I have for hoovering up the endless amounts of hay to try and keep it under some sort of control. It's very loud. I always warn my piggies that "nasty noise" is happening before I put it on and so they associate "nasty noise" with the garden vac going on. At first they were very frightened but as they realise its not going to hurt/eat them they don't worry about it anymore.

When Merry came to live with us he was in a separate cage next to the girls for a while. He was desperate to meet them and his noisy bar biting was driving me crazy. I did some hoovering and he stopped clanging and banging and just watched me. It wasn't like a fear thing, he seemed fascinated. The hoover was on a lot more that week!

I hoovered right by mine from a young age and they couldn’t care less now. I always warn them it’s being turned on too, and then chatter away at the same time so they know all is well.

My Ted is bomb proof, he and his brother Bill have been used to us hoovering around their cage since they were 4 weeks old. Posh and Ginger are rescues, they have obviously not lived inside and are scared of the tv, music, Alexa and especially the hoover!

Mine are also bomb proof, the only thing that sends them scattering is if someone rings a doorbell on the tv!
