I have been informed (by a vet no less) that demodex mites will not necessarily be treat with ivermectin. I thought Ivermec treat all parasites ? I know it doesn't treat ringworm but isn't that a fungal infection ?

Reason I ask is I have a mouse that I thought had mites.... treat 3 times with ivermec at intervals and the problems got worse. I am now using an anti fungal cream but its only been a day or two so far so I can't tell the effectiveness of that yet.

Has anyone else had this problem ?

I can't give you specific answers to your questions, only a general, vague idea, but I hope it's of some use!

Ringworm is a fungal infection, yes. In piggies, you'd treat any kind of fungal with topical solutions, such as antifungal shampoos and creams. The more severe cases of fungal skin infections can be treated systemically, with Itrafungol.

When you worm piggies you use both Ivomec and Valbazen/Panacur, because on their own they don't cover the entire parasitic spectrum. Just Ivomec will not deal with all parasites, while just Valbazen/Panacur will also not deal with all of them. The method of administration (oral, injection, topical) will also affect how well the problem responds.

I couldn't say if Ivomec treats demodex mites as I know nothing about them at the moment, but I did discover that Ivermectin - given either orally or injected - won't treat parasites which do not feed of the hosts blood.

ETA - Susie, I did a search on Guinea Lynx and came up with this topic. While still about guinea pigs, it does mention that demodex mites can be tough to rid, and Revolution could be a more effective treatment. http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51122&highlight=demodex+mites
