I posted a few weeks ago about my guinea pig who I had recently bought and had a stillborn pup (we didn't know she was pregnant). She seems OK after her ordeal but recently she has been scratching quite a lot, also Ive noticed fur in her cage likes she's moulting a bit (but cant see any bald patches). She's always been quite nervous, but recently when we've picked her up she makes a noise like she's not happy and if I try and brush her, she seems quite jumpy and makes a sort of sqeaky nouse. I've read that guinea pigs can sometimes have mites when they've been through a stressful time so wondering if she has them. I've uploaded some photos I took tonight and she seems to have little black flecks in her fur, dont know if this is just a bit of dirt from hay as she is white or whether they are mites. they dont seem to be moving. If so what treatment does she need and do I need to treat my other guinea pig as she has been scratching a bit too. The poor thing is only 4 months old and has already been through a pregnancy. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Have been looking online and see Xeno 450 is a treatment for mites. Would it be safe to use this even if it turns out not to be mites?

Dear Roser - please be patient . I wouldn't start a treatment until you have had advice from someone experienced. I am sure you will get an answer in due course

Thanks PiggieOwner, do you think I should take her to the vets? She is eating fine but just seems to scratch alot and not like being handled too much. Maybe I should wait and see but don't want her to be uncomfortable but don't want to take her to the vets either if not necessary.

I would take her to the vets for a proper diagnosis and they will be able to treat accordingly. If it is mange mites I always recommend course of Ivermectin injections, which are spaced about a week apart. The vet would need to rule out fungal too though it does not look like that to me. It is possible for them to have a combination issue though, especially if run down.
