my dog really wants to get in the room where the piggies are and I don't know what to do. My dog is sociable and friendly with other dogs but he is very lively and excitable. I have seen other dogs with piggies and they sleep together and they are fine but is this true? Is it safe?

I know this is a stupid question and I don't think its a good idea but it's been okay with other piggies.

Think how you would feel if your dog got hold of a piggy because he won't let go till it's dead.
You have to decide yourself, to me no way. We have a C&C cage about 2/12 3ft off the ground.they can look but not touch, & we are always in the room, when they are. What breed is your dog?

If I ever had Guinea Pigs and dogs, I would make sure that they were never in contact with each other.

I wouldn't by the sound of it. My Ginny, rip, was around years before Zeb, my dog, came to us and was round for years after. Zeb was very docile with Ginny, letting him use her as a pillow while on my lap, but I wouldn't trust her with any other pigs. If your dog is excitable and wanting to get into the pigs room (could be predator instinct) it's best to keep them far apart.

It depends on the dog but you can never trust them.

My first dog was fine with the pigs, she would move off her bed for them if they wanted to climb in. She was never left alone with them.

Our last dog I did not trust at all. The whole time they were in the same house, she never ever saw them. I kept them apart at all time.

I've seen and heard plenty of stories of guinea pigs killed by dogs, too - and three of them were family piggies of ours, not thanks to a neighbours' dog working its way through their badly maintained fence and breaking into what we thought was a safe, lidded run in an enclosed garden while we were at school!
It only takes seconds to bite; you cannot step in that quickly.

I have also seen too many frightened piggies in those videos and photos that are shared online; the signs are usually subtle, but they are there.

Excitable dogs and guinea pigs do not mix. Dogs are still predators with a predator's instinct. Guinea pigs are prey animals, first and foremost. They are not animated dog toys, as tempting as the idea is. Please keep them apart!

I recently got my pigs and my dogs have totally ignored them. The cage is off the floor and for the first day the dogs would come over, sniff the cage and walk away, now they don't even bother looking up when the piggies are popcorning and squeaking.

Would I let them meet face to face? Not a chance. My dogs are good but instincts can't be controlled.

My friend has a Patterdale Terrier and although he is lovely and docile just the smell of my gps sets him off! he just wants to eat them! He is now banned from my house and my garden. Fortunately she does understand.

wow your first dog was so kind! X I don't really trust mine and defo won't have them together

My friends got a huge whopping dog that's soft as anything with her guinea pigs. My mum has a Jack Russell cross and although she seems scared of the pigs when they are in their hutch I wouldn't trust her at all. We had a rat in the garden when they were staying with us and her natural instincts kicked in and it was dead in seconds.

My dog is not allowed to be alone with our piggies. She is allowed around their cage and they all sniff noses. They also share a sniff when the piggies are having lap time. But never alone. My dog seems to mean well-but the piggies could be gone in a single well meaning play nip. Never make that error in judgement.
