So I just got two baby sows from the same litter, they are about 3 1/2 weeks old and I got them yesterday (Monday). I think that they are already starting the dominance process and I was wondering if this is okay at their age? They grew up with a pretty big herd and are now just down to two, they’re in a new house, and are extremely skittish (since they’re babies) so I’m not sure if they are stressed.

I first noticed when Gingerbread (Ginger) tried to eat out of the same bowl as Greenbean (Bean), but the latter nipped at her and sent her away. There was a bigger incident when Bean was eating hay and Ginger came up and sniffed her butt causing Bean to snap at her again. They lifted their noses at each other for a bit and I think chattered teeth until Ginger left, but Bean followed. I think they faced off again and Bean lunged at Ginger and Ginger fled. They faced off a couple of times overall, but every time Ginger ended up retreating after a few seconds.

I’m hoping this is normal and okay, I don’t want either of them to get hurt if this escalates. They both seem to want to be dominant, but Ginger has so far backed down every time. They just seem so young to me but I honestly don’t know when they would start the dominance process.

At 3 1/2 weeks old, they are very young to have already been sold.

It’s entirely normal behaviour to take food from each other and be showing some dominance. It’s only a problem if they fully fight as that will be bond breaking but at that age, they would just be desperate to be together for companionship

Okay, thank you!
