Hi TGPF!

Recently I've observed an odd little change in our dominant boar, Joey, where regardless of cage layout, temperature, lighting, noise, food, etc, he'll always resort to resting *underneath* his pee liner, even if it's used or dirty - This is a bit of an issue, as when his brother Bluebear starts popcorning, he sees it as a regular bit of flooring, and can jump ontop of him unintentionally.

To combat this, we put a bunch of obstacles in his way blocking entry to this part of the cage, to see if that would reset his behaviour (This has only been recent - Last week or so), but he brute-forced his way under there when everything was quiet, shoving aside the cardboard house and tunnel we put there to try and deter him. On some instances, he'll even tunnel under the second liner to the bare doggy pee pads we have underneath. For reference as well, they always have plenty of hay to tunnel under, and we often put hay over some of their tunnels to give that tunneling experience.

It's a bit odd that he's so persistent to get under there, so I'm just wondering why? Nothing has changed in terms of their cage, behaviours (Other than this), eating habits or hydration, and they both appear fine and healthy... But this sudden change is bizarre - Could it be due to the darker days and colder temperatures (Meaning the house is warmer than usual due to needing to use central heating)? Or could it be a sign of something else? For reference here's a picture of the area he rests - The pink ball shows where he'd usually be.

A lot of piggies just like doing it!
Mine are bedded on hay and love nothing more than getting inside a pile of hay, it’s no different to with fleece.

Hmmm ok - I just thought it was odd due to it being his pee blanket! Would you recommend I put another small blankie in there or something? Or just leave him to his devices?

Piggies don’t care whether they’ve pee’d or pooped on it! It’s just fun for them!

it’s uo to you - you can add in some blankets so he’s got other places to burrow, or ensure they have a big pile of hay in a tray so he can go in there if he wants to

Ok, I am just a bit concerned due to Joey's history with illness; I just get worried about what's 'too much hiding'? If there is such a concept with piggies?

yes they can take themselves away if they are feeling off colour But equally going under things can be entirely normal and not a cause for concern. if you are concerned that this is a concerning change in behaviour Then If you can weigh him daily to check his hay intake, step in with syringe feeding if he is losing weight and take him for a check up.

Maybe with the shorter and darker days recently, you are putting artificial lights on more and he doesn't like them, and right under the liner is the best way to block out the lights? Sounds unlikely, but you never know...

Our piggies have started hiding under their vet bed. It might be because the room is a bit cooler, so I’m looking at getting some cosy accoutrements for their cage. They always have a big pile of hay to snuggle in, too! I think they enjoy the burrowing as well.
It’s very cute when they build themselves little tunnels. Only problem is, Fuzzy’s water dishes keeps getting knocked over!

One of my girls did this for a while too, and I also worried it could be a sign of illness.

She was fine, just liked going "in the sewer" as we called it!

I did my best to block any way in, and would lay a piece of loose fleece across the floor for her to get under.

Eventually she stopped. It didnt go on super long but I HATED it!

Thank you for your replies, I have purchased another hidey that is more of a blanket which I hope will make him feel much safe!

One cause for concern is that when I notice him hiding he seems to be hunched up and just kind of like standing there? He has always done this since he was 10 weeks old but I am just concerned if he is stressed or coming down with something. Other times he is popcorning away, running around and playing with his toys so I am unsure why he does that. The only other cause for concern is a small amount of gunk generating near one of his eyes... But again, this has been a theme with him since a young age and due to his history of URIs.
