Not a good start to cage clean day, big pig Clover's swollen ear looks even more swollen today so I'm glad she has a vet appointment booked for friday...
Then I noticed that Piggle is honking, Blodwen's feet look sore, and Ollie is bunny hopping!

Hopefully Piggle just inhaled her food again, she's greedy and the hay I put in the playpen was the last of a box and a bit dusty. I'll be listening out for any more honking over the next couple of days before deciding whether she needs the vet, as she's eating and happy.

Blodwen will be getting her paws cleaned with the antiseptic CLX paw wipes the vet recommended then moisturised with gorgeous guineas F&M cream like Jezzy floof has every week, plus I will be putting a fleecy pee pad under her favourite hidey and changing it every day. Then Blod's feet will be added to my weekly health check priority list!

Ollie (who has interestingly deformed hips and back legs, he usually has an ice skating gait but bunny hopping is new) will be encouraged to walk about in the playpen for once this afternoon rather than sleeping in a paper bag so I can see how mobile he is, and if he's still hopping then its off to the vets...

All under control but I just thought I'd share this as an example of all the minor health concerns that can and do crop up in the same week, to highlight the importance of regular health checks and saving enough money for vet bills- if all this lot need the vet and some minor treatment that would cost about £200, if Clover's ear needs a biopsy and Ollie needs an xray that might be more like £500...

Don't these wheeky little keep their piggy slaves worried?!

In answer to your title, don't they just!
I do hope your little one's are all okay and it's just Clover's ear that needs the vet.

I think all good guinea pig keepers have an anxiety in the back of their brain, waiting for the day they have to part with loads of cash and start syringe feeding.

When I see parents and their children viewing guinea pigs with the staff in pets at home, I think, you don't know what you're letting yourself in for 😏. But they are worth every bit of depressing times from them

Yep they certainly do worry us. Christian is my main concern atm. As is moving them all (hopefuly soon, should have been tomorrow) down to our new house and into the garage.

Sending you well wishes to you and your piggies. Many of us have been there. Critical care and water feeds at 2am because we love our piggies. Couldn’t agree more with skypipdotbertie . People who have animals without understanding and commitment make me 🤮. That said I wouldn’t have been united with my four beautiful boy piggies. They make my heart go :yahoo:

Well Piggle has stopped honking thank goodness and she shot up the ramp to the hayloft so I think she just inhaled her breakfast :)
Blod does have slightly sore feet and rather damp bum fur so that's something to keep checking on! She was treated for a UTI a month ago and was signed off by the vet as fine but might be worth another vet check if it carries on...
Not sure about Ollie pigwig, he's currently in the playpen and because mean mummy scatter fed his veg rather than putting it in a paper bag so I could watch him move about... he is trying very hard to run and get his broccolli before his wife eats it! I dont think he is in pain as there is a lot of attempted adorable disabled running and lots of eating... but he seems to be having some left foot issues rather than hip issues, he's walking on his heel a bit and one of his toes looks a bit funny... hopefully he's just torn a nail!

All the best!

I have been known to turn up at the vets with a last minute blind stowaway in the piggy luggage...

They really do seem to enjoy causing us worry.

I have had a Mavis a bit off colour this week, not wanting her favourite treats and slightly squishy poop, which is always a worry as she has a tumor in her bladder. However, she seems ok now but I am keeping an eye on her.

Then Ginger had noisy breathing one morning but had a good sneezing session which cleared it. He is also a greedy skinny pig who inhales his food. Must be a skinny pig thing.

Poor little Blod and Ollie Piggie Wig, hope they are feeling better soon x

Well I decided to book Ollie in at the vets just to be on the safe side but they are booked up for the next week except for book-on-the-day emergencies :( so the receptionist spoke to the vet who suggested I give him some loxicom (which he's been prescribed before for his funny legs) then decide if he's better or worse after a couple of days and if he's worse phone before 10am to get him seen as an emergency... fortunately I found one unopened bottle of loxicom in my piggy medicine drawer that is still in date!

Wow, that’s several piggies keeping you on your toes. I hope everyone is ok. Good job you’ve got a decent vet fund.
It’s a bit like a dispensary at mine at the moment. I’ve got Maggie (foster) just finished antibiotics for a UTI, Felix on antibiotics for a UTI, Holly in antibiotics for conjunctivitis/ URI and 2 foster piggies being treated for fungal. But everyone is on the mend.

Yes it feels a bit like that here today but checking my piggy medicines none of them have been prescribed loxicom since April so actually they must be mostly doing ok! Think we've had a few courses of baytril and some foot wipes and creams but no pain medication prescribed in a while... which is actually a bit annoying when you need some! The last unopened bottle I found is use by end of October so well done Ollie for having wonky leg issues today not in a couple of weeks :)

My vet told me (when I needed Metacam and it was out of date in a couple of days) that it would be OK as long as it smelt like honey and didn't have any discolouration or crystals in it and to check it by giving the bottle a good shake like normal and syringing out 1ml into a shallow dish and having a good old look at it. 🤔 I would follow your vet's advice though as different vets have different ideas.

I'm sure they plan it amongst themselves and make sure to all get unwell at the same time to keep us busy! No sooner have I got Misty sorted and off medication I've got Shelly on it for her poor legs. Thankfully Tilly is due to finish her panacur on the 16th but I'm dreading it also because I just know one of the others is biding their time to take her place in the illness queue!

Hope the piggies are doing better 😁 How was the vets today? Xx
I started a new thread in guinea pig chat for Clover going to the vet! She is fine, she had a haematoma on her ear which has been drained. Ollie is booked in to the vets on 28th seeing as he seems fine with a bit of loxicom for now. Thanks for asking! :)

Hope all the piggies are doing ok now everyone.

It really does show how important the vet fund is.
Mine took a real hammering last year and hadn’t long recovered when Micah arrived.
No I discover that the vet fees are going to be much higher than I’ve been paying before we moved.
All piggies have been given strict instructions not to get sick!

I hope the piggies are paying attention! We are now down to Ollie bunny hopping (but I'm not totally sure he really is, as he often popcorns while doing it) but he's due a 6-months-since-last-vet-check check up anyway to see if he needs any loxicom for his funny legs in the cold weather... and Blodwen's wet bum and slighty sore feet. Blod is going to get a bum bath and foot spa this weekend then if I check a week later and she's got yucky underneaths again then she'll be back at the vets in half term week too! I keep trying to tell the piggies you can only be ill in the school and/or university holidays...
