hello guys,
well yesterday i took my female guinea pig to (vets4pets) because she wasnt eating but she mainly was just eating hay and drinking water. They gave us metacam (whatever its spelt) to stop the pain because the vets dont know what it is.
They have suggest it could be
1.diabetes
2.liver problem
so we had to hand the pee to vets so waiting for them to phone back in the morning to know what it is and i just dont wanna lose because my heart will be broken forever but the best thing is too put her sleep with no pain or anything so please hope theres nothing wrong with her:(

Has she lost weight or showing signs of pain? How old is she?

Fingers crossed for her, I'm sure she's fine :)

Not eating could be a symptom of many things, not just the two mentioned above.

See what the vet says when they ring and if they say she needs to be PTS, I would suggest taking her to a guinea pig specialised vet in your area as not eating doesn't mean the end. A good vet will do more investigation.

I agree with Jen above, if there are no other signs for pain such as weight loss, hunching, etc then it could be something different preventing her from eating. However, it sounds unusual because normally when pigs lose appetite or don't want to eat it's usually the hay they stop with first over and above pellets and veggies. Hay does make up 80% of the diet so is the most vital part.

I am very sorry; please weigh her daily and top her up with syringe feed if necessary.

Diabetes is usually diagnosed with a blood test (which is not easy with guinea pigs). Guinea pig urine is naturally high in glucosamine and it can be misleading.

See what the results come back with but seek a second opinion if needed, diabetes diagnosed by a dip stick is usually not very accurate and can be related to something in their diet instead. Usually if my pigs stop eating all but their hay it means there is a pain response, due to gas or something else. I think first step for your vet should be to prescribe appropriate pain relief.

we are picking up another medicine for her tomorrow from vets

Is it possible for her to see a vet who is more experienced with guinea pigs? Not eating well can be a sign of MANY things in guinea pigs, many of which are treatable issues, so I would not want to put her to sleep without a more thorough assessment. Did the vet check her teeth at all? Sometimes dental issues are more than enough on their own to stop a guinea pig from eating. At this stage it really could be almost anything, so monitor her weight and see if she can have a more thorough assessment.

Hi @kiera.
I am sorry to come across all admin-y but I have removed your other thread. Please can I remind you to keep to one thread on the same topic as it makes following the issue extremely difficult and is also a breach of the forum rules.

Have your vets much experience with guinea pigs?

Baytril is an antibiotic. It can put piggies off their food (but hasn't ever done so with mine) but it can be used to treat infection. Where do the vets think the infection is?

Is she eating and drinking much? If not are you topping her up with syringe feeds?

Have the vets checked her teeth? How old is she?

Sorry to ask so many questions.
