Hi, I've been running around to the vets lately as 3 of my guinea pigs have a uri(they seem to be getting a bit better)and my other guinea pig has pnuemonia:(

I was wondering, my two older guinea pigs have been taking 5ml/cc DAILY of baytril for 2 1/2 weeks. They weight about 900g each (.9kg). I feel like this isn't enough daily, as they still have symptoms of nose disharge and occasional sneezing. Would it be safe to administer the dose every 12 hours instead of every 24 hours? I just don't want this to keep happening :( thanks guys

I mean.5ml baytril lol sorry

You really need to ask your vet but my last Baytril was prescribed at 0.4ml twice a day for a URI. I had a 1,200g piggy, but she lost weight and that may have been based on her lower weight.

If baytril hasn't worked I would speak to your vet about trying another antibiotic. Zithromax is supposed to be best for uri's if your vet is happy to prescribe it

I agree with what people have said. Always check with your vet before altering medication. If Baytril isn't working, it's worth trying a different antibiotic. Septrin is often better for URIs than Baytril, so suggest that to your vet.

Okay I will thanks guys

Baytril dosage does sound a little low. My piggie Pemba recently had mild cystitis and was prescribed 0.4ml Baytril twice a day for 10 days. He weighs around 1160g.

I would either increase the frequency to twice a day and decrease the amount to 0.4ml or switch antibiotic. Always consult a vet before altering medication though.

I did have a vet once prescribe 0.2ml once a day and guess what, that did absolutely nothing. We don't use that vet anymore, unsurprisingly.

That's two of us prescribed 0.4ml twice a day...my vet does know guinea pigs. 2 1/2 weeks is a long time for them to be taking it and it's still not clearing up. I would be tempted to find another vet.

Hadley was recently on Baytril for a respiratory infection at 0.4 mL twice a day (based on weight, she is about 3 lbs.) I would call the vet and see about going to twice a day, but would check with them too. Baytril can be hard on the gut. It's also possible that the antibiotic is a bad match to the bacteria, after two weeks without improvement the vet may suggest trialing a different med instead (Hadley seems to have done well on the Baytril, but the was after failing to improve to baseline on three weeks of Bactrim, so sometimes a change of meds is needed!)

Thanks guys, I went today to get doxyclyine but they didn't give me a dosage. How much should I do a day? .4ml?
