Hello,

My guinea pig has been dragging his right leg behind him for the last three days, he is eating and drinking and does not flinch or pull away when the leg is touched or moved. Any ideas?

when we go to the vets they always seem to just guess and we don't want to take the wrong advice.

He is 4 yo and weighs 1.3 kg.

Thank you!

Hi, welcome to the forum, please could you update your location on your profile as it will help us to help you.

Has he seen the vet already about his leg? if not then I think he needs checking over by a vet, it could be he has an injury or some kind of vitamin deficiency. If you are in the UK we have a recommended vets locator. If it is an injury the vet will most likely prescribe anti-inflammatory pain relief like Metacam.

Hi! Please have him seen by a competent vet as soon as you can; only he can see and scan your piggy and treat accordingly. The injury is likely to sit higher up near the spine or there may be another cause to what is causing the lameness. To my knowledge, a sudden drop of calcium or vitamin C deficiency tend to affect both hind legs.
We have got a piggy savvy vet locator for our UK members on the top bar.

With members from all over the world, we find it very helpful in always giving you the best possible advice for your location straight away if you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thanks!

Thanks guys, we took him to the vet and had an X Ray, it is not dislocated or broken but the X ray picked up some arthritis, which may be the cause, we have been given some anti inflammatory meds, so we will see how it goes, anybody have any experience with this?

I have had a few piggies aged 4 or over with arthritis in hips, knees or paws and they tend to do really well with some anti-inflammatories. We used it longer term in two of our boys with no ill effect, we just used the minimum dose required to keep them mobile and comfy.

Heat pads like snugglesafes can help ease sore joints too and are cosy and comfy at this time of year.

My little one as arthritis. I give her glucosamine and loxicom to help.
