My boys are getting older now. At minute I am feeding 30gms of pellets and 45gms of muesli between 2 pigs. The packs state adult piggies 30-50 for the pellets and 40-60 for museli. My boys are growing and was wondering if I need to increase the amounts or not.

Presently their ages are Tia about 1yr 3mns approx
Amy 1yr 1 month approx
Tiger about 10 months
George about 10 months.

All ages are a bit useless as just guessing but girls are def over a year and boys def just under a year!

The thing is I have always fed on the bottom end of the amount suggested but lately they have been emptying their bowls. I don't want to over feed them and they are still all putting on weight so should I leave it be or increase the amounts?

Dried food is the least important part of the diet. I tend to start limiting the pellets (as opposed to filling the bowls and refilling as soon as it is emptied) at the age of 6 -8 months. Most piggies are fully grown between the ages of 9 months and 15 months - most usually reach their adult size and weight by 12 months.

I'd be inclined to not give in and keep feeding them more - it's great that they are enjoying it, but they are getting a fair bit of dried food, given that they are getting the daily amount of each type of food. Make sure they have plenty of hay, they should turn to that once they realise they have to wait a while before their dried food is topped up.

I also feed two types of pellets - at the moment it is Science Selective and Burgess Blackcurrant and Oregano. I give them half a handful each of the Science Selective in the morning. The bowls are usually empty by bedtime, so I give them a similar amount of the Burgess to see them through the night. Most bowls are empty by the morning, but they don't really miss having the dried food unless they go a full day or two without it!

Mine get their food bowl filled up in the morning, and I don't refill. I give them a bowl of veggies at teatime and keep the hay rack topped up. They are huge boys weighing over 1.3kgs each so they must be getting enough to eat :)

Thanks you've put my mind at rest! I will leave them be for now as they get hay rack refilled 2/3 times a day, morning, when I'm home from work and then later in evening if required. They get two meals of veggies a day too so I'm sure they are ok for now. May start feeding more if they start loosing weight etc..

I always have dried nuggets available for my lot. None overweight as they just eat what they want and when.

Veggies/fruit and hay given at tea-time and God forbid if I am late serving! pow-pow:))

yeah same here. I top up the bowls whenever they are getting low and don't ration it.

non of mine are over-weight. they eat quite a bit between them but they still eat a LOT more hay and more veggies

mine have pellets all day,if the run out i do refill them,as some of my pigs are getting older i dont give them as big refills but most of mine are under 8 months old so they need it anyway,i dont believe anything thats good for them should be given cautiously as most piggies do not ever have a problem with weight;)
