I have a 18 months old boar ,Billy, who I believed to be lonely and so I recently found him a friend in the form of an 8 week old adorable baby boar. Despite the odd teething problem they are already devoted to each other. The problem is this little one has been fed on mixed dried feed to which he seems particularly patial.

My guinea pig has always had dried feed of Science Selective Guinea Pig and has seemed happy with it.

So as not to upset the new baby I have put some his dried mix which the breeder gave me in with the food dish of Science Selective. My 18 month boar has now become as addicted as the baby to this multicoloured mix and they now both seem to crave it like a couple of junkies. In fact Billy seems just not himself and I think it may be having a bad effect on him. At the same time I am worried that the baby will go hungry if I pull the plug on the coloured mix.

Help. Whats the best way forward to get them both back on the more suitable food.

Just bumping this thread for you, I don't have much knowledge on this, but I would gradually ween them both off the multicoloured one decrease the amount in the bowl each time and put more of the Selective science mix in the bowl.

Dried food shouldn't make up a huge percentage in Guinea's diet it should be Hay 80% (unlimited at all times) Fresh veggies (a cup full per pig per day) most people feed veg morning and evening. Small bowl of dry food morning and evening .

Both piggies will soon adapt to the change in dry food and will eat the Science Selective. For more info on Guinea food please visit the sticky http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42

this is what i would do too, we had to do this with our little boys we got back on august, they were on muesli, and now happily tuck into pellets.x

try slowly adding normal pellets or whatever food you would preffer and slowly add more and wean them of it thats what i did with my 1st 2 as the food they were on when i bought them had strange ingredients that i didnt recognise. i use pellets from wilkinsons i go through a pack every 10 days and its quite cheap an thats with all 4 of them so it goes a long way if you only have a couple

Piggies can go without pellets or mixes if needed. 80% of their diet is made of hay. So long as they have leafy greens with plenty of vitamin C in, maybe some vitamin C in their water to make sure. They should be fine. I would just leave the science selective down with none of the multicoloured mix, they should come round soon enough. If not, you can always try a different pelleted diet.

Mine get a bowl of fresh veg in the morning, unlimited hay and a bowl of guinea brunch in the evening to graze on which is changed daily as is their water, mine seem to thrive on it so I must be doing something right. ;)
