Hi, wondering about anyones experience and opinions on Dust Free Hay

Also how much hay do your piggies eat every month (for those with 2 piggies)

Thank you

Hello. I am a new piggy owner. Got them in August. I buy my hay from hay box. It’s dust free and looks and smells great. Very green. I got a box of meadow hay and a box of Timothy hay as I was unsure which they would like. They love it. They eat both types but eat more of the meadow hay. I would say my two boys have eaten a box of meadow and half a box of Timothy in three months. So it does last. They sleep on bedding hay from the local pet shop as it’s cheaper. Hope this helps.

I also get my hay from Haybox.
I buy 20kg every three weeks (15kg of meadow hay and 5kg of Timothy hay) but that is for five animals (two piggies and three rabbits). It’s not completely accurate as mine is split between all five but I’d estimate my piggies get through about 5kg a month.

I get mine from timothy hay and a local farm/feed shop. I used to go through a 9kg in about 1 month when my four piggies were inside.

Thanks, would you reccomend

Another vote for Hay Box. I typically buy a mix of Timothy and meadow. My two piggies can clear 5kg in about 4 weeks.

A lot of mine does end up in the bin though as they throw it around, so if you're looking for bedding hay I'd probably suggest something cheaper and save this for eating.

I've heard lots of good stuff about haybox hay and will be trying it out.

As for how much hay for 2 pigs. My 2 get through 2kg at the moment a week BUT my sow is heavily pregnant. A few weeks ago it was about 1kg a week. :)

I also get medow hay from haybox and I'd totally recommend it it's lovely and green and not dusty at all. I recently started buying it so I don't yet know how long it will take them to get through the box.

Another fan of Haybox here. My 3 piggies have a subscription of 5KG meadow hay every 3 weeks. Used to be every 4 weeks but they loved the last 3 batches I ordered and has been finishing it quicker than usual. They eat loads of it. Half of what I put daily though is thrown everyday because they do burrow, pee and poo in it as well.

I loved dust free but a couple of boxes were not so enjoyed and brown towards September. Switched to haybox and OMG the meadow hay, it is fantastic - chickpea approves

When I switched to Haybox meadow hay early this year, my piggies eat loads of it, especially these last 3 batches I got! They used to eat loads of the Oxbow timothy hay, but now it's meadow hay.

Yeah it is so well loved! Chickpea favours it over all else...

Timothy hay from Haybox, definitely. I used to use 'nature's own Timothy hay 5aday' and my piggies loved it, but it's VERY dusty at the bottom of the bag and it's wrapped in plastic and small packs... Hence why the switch to haybox.
For their bedding I use meadow hay from local farm shop as the Haybox isn't best for comfy snooze.

My 2 piggies barely eat 2,5kg per month and thats like half of what most of piggies eat.....till now i thought they eat the perfect amount of hay but obviously they dont.... do you consider the “thrown away“ hay as “consumed” and is it normal for my piggies to eat only 2-2,5kg per month? They are young and maybe its fine that they dont hit the 5kg mark! Both females One is 5,5 months old at 550gr and the Other one is 2 months old at 350gr

Are your piggies gaining weight each week?

Healthy weight varies enormously from piggy to piggy. Heft is a much better guide of what is healthy for the individual piggy.

My 6 get through 3.5kg a week, so it’s about the same for 2 pigs every month, if my maths is right

Hay box has my vote, my boys don’t always get it unfortunately because we have limited space but it’s definitely a favourite here

No its like half the amount.....your pigs eat half a kilo each per week while mine eat half a kilo both!
