I am off work on holiday next week so am going to order in some hay from dustfreehay.co.uk/ to give a try, seeing as I will be at home to receive the order.

do people tend to get the "soft" or "coarse or stalky" hay for their piggies?

I haven't yet ordered my own but I do know redfrock said the stalky is very stalky and there pigs prefer soft, maybe get a bag of each to try?

yeah I would assume that they would prefer the soft but you never know with my fussy gang :))

I certainly did LOL! The girls leap into the soft stuff and squeal like mad for it. The stalky stuff was seriously hard and they were not nearly as enamoured and not so much got eaten. I was also worried about the risk of eye damage with it as they love to run through it. Typically I ordered 2 soft & 3 stalky rolleyes. I am about to order another 5, but just soft ones this time. I am very pleased with the quality of it though.

Can you order less than 5 boxes?

yes you can but it is even more expensive ... working out at £9 per box :{

it works out at £6 per box if you order 5 and £4 per box if you order 10. All orders include 'free' delivery

It might be worth sharing 10 bale orders if any of us live near to each other. £4 per box is good value.

Each bale is 2kg of hay

to those that order the 5 or the 10 bales... is the package big when it arrives?

Soft hay for my piggies and buns, I ordered Thursday and it arrived today!
Always great service.
I order 10 which come in 10 hessian sacks wrapped tightly in cling film, it is big but I then separate them and put in my bunker, they keep very fresh!

thanks that was going to be my next question :))

how long does 10 bales last (and how many pigs is that for)?

I have 4 now and 4 rabbits it will last **** 3 weeks?
I normally buy in 5 bale packs so a little unsure but about 3 weeks they eat it all very quickly though so 2 days notice at the most is ok for re-order unless it is over a w'end.

I have both the soft and coarse, I mix it up well with the Oxbow and the Alfalfa King. They prefer the soft to the coarse, but they do eat both.

The packaging is big when it arrives as it is all bundled together, but it's actually ten individual 2.5kg hessian sacks of hay, similar size to the bags of pet shop hay, so storage is no problem.

10 bales is around 25kg hay. A 22kg box of Oxbow hay lasts my fourteen pigs around 6 weeks, so a 25kg (ten bale) of Dust Free should last similarly with my fourteen.

Just looked at the link and yes it is the Lunnun brand, but if you go to the dust free hay web site I think it said that the hay in plastic bags is not quite such good quality...:)

What do they come in when you order from they website? :)

When I order some this week I will be home to receive the order but under normal circumstances I won't be home as I work monday to friday and they don't do saturday deliveries...

I am concerned at the waterproofness of the package if we need to get it left somewhere by the courier... what do other folks do about delivery?

Well I'm lucky in that I don't work on Friday's so I always order on a Thursday morning and it has, so far, always arrived on the Friday. It's sent by DHL - how far away is the nearest DHL depot to you? You could always give an instructions to the couriers on the order along the lines of "if not in, please return to depot and I'll collect".

I'd make sure I ordered enough to last me a few months then you could always make sure you place an order when you have a day off. With four bunnies and two piggies, I find 10 sacks lasts me around 3 months. I'm guessing you'd have a day off every few months?

It's NOT in waterproof packaging so you'd have to have it left somewhere undercover. Norman doesn't cover it entirely to allow the hay to breathe.

I was intending on getting the 10 bale pack but wondered whether it would stay fresh enough if I only have 3 piggies?

Ive found this:

How long will the hay keep?
Properly stored (dry, airy and away from direct sun light) hay will keep easily for a year and longer, but will eventually lose some nutrients. Hay should not be kept in plastic bags where it can sweat and go mouldy.

Its from this website:

Ive seen the dust free hay on eBay but not sure if its the same stuff, here is the link.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-Bales-of-Du...et_Supplies_Small_Animals?hash=item2eab2ff89e

It also doesn't say if its the soft or stalky?

:)

LOL That link is me:) We get our hay direct from Norman and sell his pet shop version of the DFH to our customers. It is a mix of both and also includes meadow grasses and timothy hay in it too. It is still Dust Free but we have found tends to be more on the soft side than the stalky. If you would like a sample so you can compare them, I am happy to send you one.

Yes we do:)

If you think you are obsessed with hay, you should see our lounge, it looks like a hay loft from packaging up and weighing all the sample bags:))

Have you tried the American timothy and is it any good for the piggys? It looks very green on the pictures and it looks excellent quality too. :)

I bought one box of american timothy about a year ago for the bunnies. They wouldn't touch it! Just stick to stalky for them now. However, the piggies only seem to go for the soft stuff - have not tried american timothy for them but it's quite coarse so I'm not sure.

As long as you keep your hay somewhere dry, it'll last for absolutely ages.

Well I ordered a 10 bale pack of the soft hay this morning (Monday) so I'm hopeing it will arrive tomorrow (Tuesday)...

I am so excited :))

Just thought I'd update, the hay did arrive on tuesday as expected and the Pigs have given it a unanimous squeak of approval :))

It is going down a storm here AND I have not had even one sneeze out of Piglet my suspected allergy pig since switching hay :))
