Dear Forum members,

We have two boars aged 16-18 months old. They've just come back from Holiday boarding and we were informed that they both had bad cases of ear mites. We were informed that they were identified as canine mites and were treated with invermectin and given an all-clear.

My question is where did they pick up these mites from ? We are worried about reinfection.

1) They live indoors in a large C&C run, they've never been taken outdoors.
2) They eat hay from a local garden centre pet shop sourced from a local farm.
3) They also eat fresh veg and additional guinea pig mix from Allen and Page.
4) Their run is cleaned thoroughly once a week.

There are no other animals in the house.
They have never been outside the house.
We've never fed them hay or grass of our own.

I'm pretty sure that they didn't pick up the mites at home, unless you think any of the points above could have contributed.

The last time they were in the presence of other cavies or animals was 9 months ago when they were boarded with a local guinea pig breeder.

Their ears didn't seem to have issues until recently though. Is that the most likely source ? I don't know how long a mite infestation would take to become full blown.

Thanks,

Tony

It might be time to look into a new source of hay : (
I guess it could be foxes or dogs on the farm where the hay is harvested.
