Hi, has anyone got experience of this? My guinea pig had injection for this on Monday. Yesterday he was perkier and was eating better etc. Now today he seems to have gone downhill and I'm handfeeding again. My question is... is it normal for guinea pigs to get worse again? I was thinking that maybe the injection had killed the mites so he felt the benefit yesterday and then possibly some eggs had hatched and so hes feeling worse again. Please, please let me know your thoughts or experiences. mallethead
 
When my Toffee had ear mites, it was treated with an oral does of ivermectin and a weeks course of Baytril.... x
 
He's had an injection of Ivomec which I believe (but then again I'm probably completely wrong) is the same as ivermectin? How long did it take for Toffee to start feeling themself again? ?/
 
To be honest she was fine anyway, it was only on a routine nail trim and check up it was spotted, otherwise i wouldn't have known, it hadn't quite cleared up after the weeks course so i was told to do an extra few days, then it was all gone. But you wouldn't know anything was wrong xx
 
Oh good. I'm glad she was okay with it. Another trip to the V-E-T-S me thinks. Jaspers all over the place. He must needs some botics

Hey all, just thought I'd tell you what's happened with the vets today....

Jasper is now on antibiotics for a week. We've got to be extra careful because of his previous digestive problems. Back in a week to reassess.

Melvin went to make sure his ears we ok. Nope. Ear mites as well :( so he's had something but orally. I'm just glad he hasnt gone downhill too.

The manager at pet at home is gonna get a piece of my mind as soon as Jaspers better. I am going to complain VERY LOUDLY. grrrr :o And then I'm going to complain to head office. But right now my priority is getting them better. Sighs!

Take your vet bills with you P@H should re-imberse you.

Sorry to hear they are both struck with ear mites. Hopefully the AB's will do the trick xx
 
Did the vet give you any pro-biotics for Jasper? These are to help kept his good gut bacteria healthy and will hopefully prevent any trouble with his digestive tract while on anti-biotics.

He has been having pro-biotics before anyway Cavy-lady and we're hand feeding him to give him the best chance. We also have that Pro C or whatever added to his water and use this to make his mush. Thanks x

We'd already thought this Toffee. It's just so fraustrating! Why allow animals to get into this state. They seriously need to sort it out. Poor little one has had soo much to deal with and hes only about 11 weeks old. Its not the money that I'm bothered about.... but you've got to hurt them in the pocket for them to do anything about it!

Unfortunately its got too much for poor Jasper and he died some time between 2 and 5 last night. Thank you so much for all your support x

Big hugs, i am not sure were you stand with P@H now, and weather they will do anything other than offer you a "free replacement" like that will make things better again mallethead

Well we went to P@H today and spoke to the manager. She asked me if everything was okay and I said no not really. Then I told her all about Jasper and Melvin and told her that I'd come to get reimbursed for my vet bills. She said of course they'll reimburse us (with proof from credit card statement). She asked me if I wanted another guinea pig and I said no. That the last 2 weeks had been too traumatic. At this point I was close to tears and told her that we'd had to change all our plans for my week off work to nurse Jasper. That I missed out camping with my family to care for him and that we'd had to buy another cage to house him because Melvin had started mounting him. All true. She said that we shouldnt have had to do that and that she could reimburse us for the second cage as well. I'd said to her about the pigs having ear mites and that I didnt want anyone else to go thr what we had and she said that they have the pigs quarantined for a week before they go on the shop floor and checked for illnesses etc. I will never buy anything from P@H again but I have to admit that she was very sympathetic and I didnt have to kick off like I thought. Poor little Jasper tho :(
