We are new to Guinea Pigs. We have 3 females. Two we got at the end of the December and one, sweet Mabel, we got a few weeks ago. We kept Mabel from the other two for two weeks and followed cautionary procedures for introducing her to the other two (Gertrude and Bertie). The three ladies have been getting along well (we think)

This morning we woke up to find Mabel with an injury to the skin at and below her ear. Unsure if this is from biting or maybe something else. Any ideas?

It's difficult to say, my first thought would be fungal but if it wasn't there yesterday then am not sure. Have you noticed her scratching at all? or the others nipping her? is there any discharge which could indicate an ear infection? I would get her tot he vets to be checked out and get a proper diagnosis.

Please could you update your profile with you location as we have members from all over the world.

Thanks for the reply. My profile is updated.

We took her into the local pet store where we bought her. It's locally owned and operated and they seem to genuinely care. They thought it was probably mites. They kept her to run a treatment routine. Say it will take a couple of days.

In the mean time, I'm going to try and find a good vet close by.

Hi there. On first glance it looks like a fungal infection, but it seems unlikely that it would look like that over night. When Piglet had fungal on his ear, it looked scaly on the outside, and was slower progression. If you go to guinealynx.com, they have a vet locator for the US, as well as of lots of useful information for just about any guinea pig ailment. Definitely get your pig seen. If it does turn out to be fungal, it is important that you disinfect every thing that would be in contact with the pigs because it is very contagious (to humans too)! Good luck!
