I have just got home with Edward from his neuter and feel at a loss he is very still and quiet which I understand but he did not eat after the op at the vets they gave him some critical care at the vets and I brought some to bring home.He has just eaten a tiny bit of veg but the nurse said he should not be fed to much as it gives them diarrhoea ! Apart from hay veg is how main food. She said if he has not eaten by six tonight to start him on critical care 2parts warm water to one part critical care every two hours all night but how much do I give him? They gave him baytril and metacam do I put that in the fridge? She said no floor time for10 days and not to put him with a female for 10 weeks.Does this all sound ok

Hi!
Like humans, not every piggy respends to the anaestheitcs equally well.

Here are some threads that may answer your questions. Your vet nurse is good to have given you Critical Care and metacam. Keep the baytril and the metacam in a cool and dry place. Has your nurse told you when you can start giving them?

For hand feeding, you ideally cut off the narrow bit of a 1ml syringe just before it widens to prevent the plunger coming out. Feed half a syringe with the recommended mix at a time; this prevents things from going down the wrong way. Syringe 1ml of water for every 5ml of syringe food. Try and see how much you can get into him in one go; about 10-15ml are about average for one session, but you are primarily aiming at getting food into his system to keep it going, so anything at all is good! Always try a bit of solid food first to encourage him eating on his own.
If he is not at all keen on the taste of CC, you can mush up some of his pellets in boiled water, then feed when cooled down.

Make sure that you check on him and the wound once or twice during the first night even if he has started eating on his own by then. His poos may look funny for a day or two due to the operation meds. Hopefully, he'll pick up soon.

Thank you they said to start the baytril and metacalm in the morning. He has not eaten much at all he has had a wee but not had a poo

Best of luck with Edward, i hope he recovers soon!

Ginger didn't respond to well after his neuter either, i had to hand feed him veg and mashed up pellets from a spoon which seemed to work, i also had syringe give him water because he just wouldn't drink. This went on for about 2 and half days and then he started to pick himself back up but he wasn't really himself until 4 days on which then he got he appetite back, i also woke up and checked on him the first two nights.

I hope he's okay! x

Don't fret over poos, he's not had a lot to eat in the last few hours, so there won't be lots of poos. I have noticed that piggies of mine on hand feed will poo when they are being fed, as that seems to trigger the digestive system into action.

I gave him his critical care off a spoon and syringed him some water is that OK? He just looks so frightend. I am going to feed him every two hours through out the night will that be enough?

Did he have any painkiller at the vets after his op? I would have thought so, but he could well be in pain.

Feeding every every 2 hours through the night will be sufficient. Do you know roughly how many ml of critical care he had - as he had it from a spoon it is harder to tell, but it's so much easier if they take it willingly so it's good that he is taking it from a spoon.

Hopefully it is just the effects of the anaesthetic and he will get back to himself as soon as possible.

I do hope so his last feed with critical care did not go well but he did eat some mini sweet corn

Sorry the first lot he had about three teaspoons the last lot about one teaspoon
