I sent an email to Vedra about 4 or 5 days ago - how long does it usually take her to reply? I could call her but it's far easier to explain the situation in writing before talking to her.

I have never emailed her, only text or spoken to her directly. Maybe text her and ask if she recieved your email? unless she is on hols?

She prefers text to email, simply because she carries her phone around with her, difficult to do with a computer!

I was going to say the same, I have found texting quicker, but she tends to work very interesting hours, I've received communications from 1am in the past from her!

Id say to text Vedra - she will text back or ring or text to say a good time to ring.

Vedra runs the Cambridge Cavy Trust in Huntingdon (where I used to live, coincidentally!) and is a charity specialising in treatment for rodents. You pay an annual membership fee (about £25) and consultations are free, with free regular worming and Ivermec treatments.

i didnt know either, i knew the name and thought she was certain people of heres friend, if that make sense x

Yes, she's supposed to be great at dental work in pigs (without anaesthesia), we've never needed to use that yet thank goodness, but we have travelled from Kent to Cambs to see her and many people see her from all over the country too :)

Edit for Claire - no, £25 per household :)

that's such great value! thought £25 per animal was good!

I have to say unless all I want is Baytril, I take all of my pigs to Vedra now. It's 90 mins from mine to hers but it's more than worth it as at least I trust her diagnosis and get the right treatment. A trip to my 'cat and dog' vet always costs £30 - £40 just to be seen and get baytril.... so it's worth the petrol money to CCT!

She also does lectures and courses.

I find the best thing about Vedra vs. vets - aside from the specialist knowledge Vedra has, of course - is the fact that she doesn't charge consultation fees. That is the biggest expense with the vet. I've saved hundreds just on consult fees!

The £25 membership fee gets you free telephone advice, free dental work (without anesthetic), free health checks, nail clipping and worming. Any treatments, medicines, xrays etc. are obviously charged the same as the vets do, but the whole thing is done with a much more skilled hand and mind. You pay the membership once a year. It doesn't matter how many rodents you have, the membership cost is the same. I can't walk away from appointments without paying her something though, given that vets do hardly anything and charge £30 just to see them!

I feel incredibly lucky to live so close to the CCT, I moved away for 9 months last year and lost two pigs in that time, Vedra could have helped a lot more than my local vets managed - at a fraction of the cost too. Even my dad - who doesn't quite "get" the piggies - said it was not worth moving away since we rely on Vedra so much! The main reason we asked to come back to Wyton was so that we'd have Vedra on the doorstep if we needed her. rolleyes

Will give her a call tonight, I'm not great at talking on the phone so hopefully I can explain things okay - maybe I'll just read my email to her!

ummm....I am jealous! What an amazing program that is.

Has anyone done any of her courses? I am interested but wanted more feedback first

I'm in the middle of the Rodent Health Advisor course. Her writing isn't a strong point but the information is invaluable. The RHA is what I was emailing Vedra about, funnily enough!

I got the form from the CCT in person, but you can text or call Vedra and ask for the information and 'enrolment' form to be posted out to you. Let me know if you need the number. :)

I got through to Vedra on the phone tonight. I got as far as saying my name and my residential date and she stopped me and said she'd read my email. I was glad not to have to explain from scratch!

I'm not going on the residential on 22 June now, but she'll be able to arrange something that works for both her and me. There's a new training method she's starting at the end of this summer which will work perfectly for me, or she'll let me know before that about modifying the residential to suit my capabilities. Either way, she was incredibly supportive and understanding, and I am hugely grateful to her for that.

And I get to go on to the full G-BAR course while I'm waiting for the alternative residential. Happy days!

She was, I couldn't have dreamed of a better response! I thought the best I'd get was either postpone it indefinitely, or do just one day instead of three.
I will have to go down to the CCT to sit the G-BAR exams, but that is something I can push myself to cope with at the moment.

Funnily enough, after that encouragement and support from Vedra, I feel more capable of getting over my troubles!
