i found Elphie lifeless about an hour ago. I thought she was dead - she looked and felt dead, but when I was saying goodbye I noticed her breathing.

She's completely limp, but breathing. Every now and then I feel her legs pushing against me. She blinks, and every now and then she moves he head. We syringes a little water in her mouth but she makes no effort to swallow. She has weed on me three times.

She's been holding on for an hour. I don't know what to do - wait so she can die peacefully at home, or take her to the vet to put an end to her suffering.

Help me please

A vet in case they can do something? Sorry you are in this situation.. Keep us posted. Thinking about you and your piggy. I hope someone can give you some good information soon on what to do

Oh gosh I'm so sorry to read this. I would personally take her to the vet to help her on her way. Poor little love. Perhaps she's had a major stroke?

If she's had a stroke she needs to be kept quiet and in a place where there are no disturbances so that she has a chance of recovery. If she is not responding at all then she may well be on her way over the bridge. I have been in a situation where it was kinder to let the piggy go in my arms rather than put it through the trauma of getting it to the vets and pts. It is a decision only you can make and no one should judge you for it. I hope she pulls through.

I am so sorry; please keep her as comfy and warm as you can and contact an out-of-hours vet whether it is worth the risk to bring her (most likely for pts) or letting her pass away with you if she is not in any obvious discomfort. It can be a stroke or her heart going. Poor Elphie has been through so much lately! :(

It is always such a horrible experience when you find a dying piggy you cannot do much for but be with her. I have found my Mali in May in a very similar state; she passed away peacefully a few hours later attended by me and her two companions, so I feel for you very much!

Shortly after I posted here, Elphie began to show the signs I typically recognise in a piggy about to pass. She died shortly after in my arms, sitting on our garden swing. I'm glad she went when she did, I would have hated to have taken her to the vets. I've only had one who has needed help to cross over, and it wasn't a nice experience for either of us. I'm devastated.

Oh I'm ever so sorry for your loss. Atleast she was comfy and happy in your arms at the time. You are in my thoughts. Rip little one xx

Run free little one xx

I'm glad she went in your arms the way she did, and that you didn't take her to the vets after all. It's so hard to know, because on the one hand if you suspect they are dying it's nicest for them to go peacefully at home, but if they linger..... I had one who lingered for far too long, and I wish I could have taken her to the vet to help her. I would hate to be in that position again, as leaving her was NOT the right thing for her. But how do you know when it will be?

I'm very sorry for your loss, but relieved that she went quite quickly and very peacefully. xx

BIG HUGS!

I am so very sorry for you, but glad that she didn't have to suffer for very long and could pass peacefully. It always breaks your heart when something like happens. Like you, I am always relieved when I don't have to pts, as when they linger or are clearly in discomfort but no longer able to process meds...

Please don't feel bad or like you have failed her; you have done for Eplhie what you could and you have been the most caring of piggy mummies! Sadly, sometimes it is just too much for a small body like piggies have (and which they so often let forget us with their huge personalities!). A sudden collapse comes often after a seeming recovery or a phase where things were looking up and it hits you all the harder for it. :(

I'm so sorry for you loss, I'm sure she had a loving and happy life with you x

I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like it was Elphie's time to go to the Bridge and it was good that she was able to pass in your arms in familiar surroundings rather than at the vets. Very sad for you sending you hugs.

Oh no I am so sorry :( It sounds like she had something very serious wrong with her, I also lost one of mine to diarrohea within 24 hours she passed away it was so quick despite getting help t the time there was nothing we could do . Big ((hugs)) xx

Sometimes, it is better to let them go peacefully in your arms if you are sure they are passing, than subject them to the trauma of getting them to the vets. That way they are being loved, not stressed by a stranger in a strange surroundings. I have had 2 pass this way. One was 10 years old when she passed. I have never forgotten her or her last moments, which were precious. It never gets easier.
