Hi, had my GP at the vet yesterday for what we think is respiratory infection ( noisy breathing and runny nose ) got given Enrofloxacin (0.1ml twice daily and meloxicam 0.2ml twice daily ) at the moment holding weight ok and seems to be eating but very lethargic. I’ve also started childlife vit C supplement should I give a probiotic too and critical care ?
Thanks

I’m sorry to hear this.

We recommend a probiotic when a piggy is on antibiotics.

Make sure to only give the vitamin c for two weeks and then stop giving it.

You absolutely can offer critical care

Thanks so much for the reply. Any recommendations on the best pro biotic ? I have bene-bac-plus 4g tubes and pro C probiotic but unsure of best way to give it ?

Hi

I am very sorry.

Please step in with feeding and watering support with any lethargic piggy and switch to weighing daily on your kitchen scales first thing in the morning.

If you do not have Critical Care or any other recovery formula brand at hand, here are tips on how you can bridge the gap: How to Improvise Feeding Support in an Emergency

Please also step in with probiotics and - if your piggy has a healthy companion - with poo soup, i.e. healthy live gut microbiome transfer, which is more effective when done properly.
The baytril (active ingredient enrofloxacin) is low dosed, so hopefully there will be just some softened poos but no loss of appetite.

Has your vet checked for any fluid build up in the chest or body as well?

Wishing you and your poorly one all the best.

Excellent I’ve read the files attached and will start with critical care and Pro C probiotics
I’m weighing her daily too.
The vet was happy with her yesterday and said she was alert and eating so the plan was to start her medication and if she improves carry on but if not to come back and do X-rays etc
Thanks for help

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have at any time in this your dedicated support thread.

It's a good sign that she is still eating on her own because it means that her breathing is not too bad. The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat, so loss of appetite before any medication means that any respiratory problem is pretty serious.
But that explains the comparatively low dosage - although dosages for the respiratory tract (unless battling pneumonia) tend to be noticeably lower than for the urinary tract.

Wishing you the best.

Update - today unfortunately Matilda deteriorated quickly and I took her back to the exotic vet and after a discussion it was decided to stop her suffering and she was PTS.
Thanks for all the advice I really appreciated that.

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that Matilda deteriorated too fast for her meds to kick in. You have given her the most loving and
most heartbreaking gift we can make a beloved one. If it is any consolation to you, you have done exactly the right thing.

Please be sad but don't be bad. Some respiratory infections can develop and get worse very quickly, sometime in a matter of just hours - especially in the frailer piggies. You have done all the right things; it just wasn't to be.

Be sad but please don't feel bad about yourself and don't feel guilty. Give yourself time to not be OK for a little time and to grieve for as much as you need to.

You are welcome to either have this thread transferred to our End of Life and Bereavement section for your ongoing support and any further questions or open a new thread in there if you feel that our understanding community support will help you come to terms with it all.

This guide link is for yourself: Human Bereavement: Grieving, Processing and Support Links for Guinea Pig Owners and Their Children

And this one is for any companion(s) of Matilda: Looking After a Bereaved Guinea Pig

I hope that they can help you.
