Hi, my names Noelle me and my boyfriend have two male guinea pigs Matty and Woody and I noticed they started sneezing and coughing and their eyes got watery and I asked my boyfriend if we could take them but he said nothing was wrong then they got a runny nose and we took them to a vet and they said they both had an upper respiratory infection and gave us Enrofloxcin yesterday but today Woody started coughing way more then he was and I dont know what i should do. Should I just wait to see how it workd out till their next appointment on the 20th? I'm kinda paranoid but I'd rather be safe then sorry.

@Noellechardon Enrofloxacin is otherwise known as Baytril, and that's the 'go-to' antibiotic that most vets that don't see guinea pigs use.

It can take a few days to take effect. I think if you took them back to the vet today they would say that you just need to give it time. But, give them a call as ask if you can bring them back.

My vet is very experienced with pigs and they would use Sulfatrim in the first instance for a URI. They find it works much better than Baytril.

@Jaycey Okay thank you for the advice. I'll call first thing in the morning. But in your opinion would probiotics be a good choice while having them on the antibiotics I saw a few threads where people said antibiotics can cause problems.

Absolutely it helps their gut take the drugs. Always worth having a piggy first aid kit style at home, same as humans. I keep probiotic, critical care, dioralyte, etc etc.

Read the instructions for the probiotics, it will tell you how to mix and dosage etc. The sooner the better on probiotics I find so if you can fast track all the better.

If they won't eat you will have to syringe feed them, critical care to keep them going. If they suddenly stop eating or pooping get them to the vets for an injection. Are they off the food because of the probiotics. You can go up to the vet & they should give or sell you a syringe.

Hi, sorry I haven't been on - work commitments.
Have you tried speaking with your vet and or getting them to show you how to syringe feed? There is a guide here on the forum, its so important to get your pig to eat as their guts can shut down quickly.
