I have just got back from Vedra's with Errol. (Yes, I went myself!)

It appears he has a slipped lens:

I was doing the usual photo shoot this morning and noticed he had a cloudy circle on his left eye. Perfect circle, no scuff marks to suggest a hay poke.

I figured it best to get him checked at Vedra's, she checked under the magnifying light and believes it is a slipped lens. A cataract is possible but as it appeared overnight it's more likely to be the lens problem. Not really fixable unless I want to spend £1000 for some the vet school to work on it! It won't bother him, his vision will be impaired though.

It will be an interesting condition to learn more about though.

I am sorry about Errol - it is disconcerting for a piggy when it happens so quickly!

Make sure that you do not approach him or touch him from his blind side.

Oh dear, Laura - sorry to hear this. Haven't heard of that before either (is it anything like detached retina in humans?). I do hope he's ok, give him a cuddle from me :)

And - BRILLIANT that you were able to go with him! :))

Thanks Wiebke, Helen & Sophie. It's not bothering him at all; it is the same eye he had that small lump in, which mysteriously disappeared a couple of weeks ago. His slipped lens isn't noticeable unless there's decent light, luckily it was photo shoot day and even more luckily Vedra could see us this afternoon.
I would like to know what causes the slipped lens, if nothing else. I'm not finding much on Google re guinea pigs and this problem!

Sophie - I know, I didn't want to leave! I had to take photos of the cattery, so went inside and out to the back of the bungalow. I could have stayed all day, makes me think I might finally get the RHA residential done in the next few months.

Bless Errol never heard of that one before. Well done to you for going with him, and I hope you complete the RHA soon you are a very attentive piggy mum and I am sure you woudl do very well . x

Poor Errol! Glad its nothing serious, he's such a cutie pie. I have heard of slipped lenses in dogs (and I think I remember a cat with it coming into our cattery once). Might be an idea to try looking the condition up for dogs and cats and see if there's any useful information.

Well done for going to see Vedra! Thats awesome! Would be brilliant if you can do the residential as you're so keen with everything else, I reckon you'd absolutely love it. Keep us posted!

Awwwwww poor Errol :( I know that his sight will be impaired, but his quality of life won't at all be effected living with you, he's a beautiful happy boy, just maybe keep all his toys and houses always in the same place :) I bet he's not even bothered by it :) It will be you that will worry yourself :(
Fab that you went to Vedra's, she is a lovely lady, I am sure you will cope at the residential when you choose the right time, I would love to have an insight into her daily work etc and I myself have convinced myself I am going to do some of her courses for something for me to learn and achieve as I have such a great interest to learn about our precious little piggies :)

Glad you made it to vedras! Well done you i am sure your rha is within grasp! Hope errol learns to cope with his disability!

OOH that is a strange thing to happen, not heard of it before

And yay whoopppeeeee well done you for making the trip. I'm so jealous would love to see Vedra's set up for pigs and learn more about what she does.

Hope Errol is okay too and it doesn't cause him too much grief.

I seem to remember hearing about a horse with a similar condition when I visited the ILPH - didn't know it could happen to piggies too - although thinking about it I suppose there's no reason it shouldn't.

Well done you for going with him and holding his paw :)

Why do you photograph your pigs so frequently?

Which reminds me that I must find my video films and still photos of the CCT when it was at Alconbury.
That was before digital cameras were readily available.
Archive material!

No particular reason AP. I tend to take photos for medical records especially. The monthly photo shoots is just a result of a combined interest in piggies and photography.

Thanks for the replies re Errol. It does seem that the lens moves a little, I'm sure it is now lower down than it was yesterday. I found that you get more results in regards to the condition when you search of lens luxation. (Displacement of the lens)

That is the massive advantage of digital photography, it could be a nuisance in the days of 35mm film, having to wait at least a day to get the film developed only to find the picture wasn't quite as intended!

Precisely why I think I would be useless with film! Out of yesterdays 159 photos taken (of 14 different pigs), I kept around 40.

Don't suppose you've ever come across any lens trouble in guinea pigs?

(Just recognised the interesting link between the current discussion and the pigs problem!)

Aww, Laura, I'm so proud of you!

*hugs* to Errol, not sure of any advice to give. But I hope he's not too disorientated by his new vision. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The girls send Errol heaps of kisses and hope that his eye will be ok xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

CONGRATULATIONS LAURA WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Another step forward for you sweetie ! x)x)

Just updating this thread. Errol's eye has remained the same since February, but this week I noticed it has changed. The circle is now a beige colour, uneven. Blotchy almost. I'm not sure what it is but when I find out, I'll update again.

It looks rather like a cataract to me; they can look cloudy.

I hope that Errol is fine otherwise!

Hope you manage to find out what it is soon. Fingers crossed it'll be harmless and won't affect him in any way x

An update on Errol for you- I didn't get him in to the vets for various reasons, in the meantime I have been monitoring the eye, and there have been no further changes since updating this thread earlier in September.

Vedra checked the eye today, straight away she confirmed it is a slipped lens and not to worry about it, as it is not bothering him.
