I've had my eldest piggie Smudgey for nearly 5 years now, she has been a extremely pig for the majority of her life up until her cage mate sadly passed away a couple of months age (she now has two new little friends living with her). Since this happened her health has been deteriorating and in the past two months she's had URI's, mites and a number of other health problems.

In the past week or so she seems to be peeing a lot more, usually I can cuddle with her for a good hour or so before she needs to nip back to the play pen/cage for a wee plus I know her very well and know when she needs a wee. But now she's peeing all over the place I hadn't really thought much of it up until this afternoon. my sister was slightly concerned as when she went out to check on them she seemed to be coughing and had a slightly runny nose. I took her out for a cuddle and a check over, she had a slightly crusty nose but wasn't coughing but in the 15-20 minutes I had her out she had peed 5/6 times and completely soaked the towel I had her own and it was slightly brown. I suspected a kidney or bladder infection but wasn't sure as she didn't seem to be in pain while peeing. I am planning to take her down to our local piggie rescue as the lady who runs it is trained in guinea pig health care.

I just wanted to get a second opinion before I do though as they are very busy and I hate to feel like I'm wasting her time.

thanks x

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear that Smudgey is off colour. I would definately get her checked out ot be on the safe side. Increased weeing can be a sign of a UTI. You can take a wee sample down to the vets with you, to get a sample is fairly easy

You'll need:
1 x piggie
1 x sterile pot
2 x 1ml syringe
1 x large Tupperware or bowl

The way we do it is to carefully syringe piggle some water using one syringe or feed them some very very wet veg, cucumber, lettuce, soaking wet celery Leaves are good for this.
Then place your pig in bowl or large Tupperware and wait for nature to take it's course...
After piggy has had a wee, suck the wee up using the other syringe into the sterile pot. Place pot in fridge until you take it to the vets.

Hope this helps and Smudgey feels better soon

Hi and welcome to you and Smudgey to the forum :)
Really sorry to hear about her issues :(
I would go so a cavy savvy vet as they can check her right over and then administer the medicine if it's a UTI. Remember too if using medications you'll need probiotics, ask for them at your vets :)
Love your avatar :)

GOOD LUCK XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
