I've started this in a new thread as it doesn't apply to my pig directly, since May Patrick began squeaking when urinating it's still ongoing now I have been told he has chronic inflammation of the bladder wall.

As we all know I have been a member of this forum for sometime now and I watch H&I urine tract problems mostly as I would like a fix for my own pig. Within the last 3 months I have heard of 4 pig's all intact boars that are producing sperms rod's.

Two of which where neutered - The first boar actively produced sperm rod's and they where getting caught in his penis after neutering he no longer squeaked but unfortunately he did develop a bladder stones and sadly he never did recover but after the neutering he did stop squeaking.

2nd boar - never had any obvious sperm rod's but when they flushed the bladder the vet commented on the sperm rod's that where flushed out, he now lives a squeak free life.

It's a huge gamble - I know which is why I want to hear from other's about there squeaky boars and if any have been neutered?

I don't believe in neutering my boars for no reason but if it could improve Patrick's health maybe it is worthwhile, I don't intend to jump to this decision on a whim, as for me losing him on the day of op or to post op complications is horrifying but of course if it allowed him to urinate without pain, it could be worthwhile.

I'm surprised no one replied to this thread as I didn't think sperm rods were that uncommon?

Little Pig has started producing these since there has been another male in the house and he quite often gets them trapped and needs me to help removing them. It has been suggested to me that perhaps this could have been a cause of his nibbling - I'm not sure given his biopsy results indicated an underlying bacterial infection - but it is certainly a possibility.

It's a shame people don't have more to say on the topic - I guess we're the exception.

It would be nice to have some information to help me make my decision. My vet is contacting the Vet school to ask, so we shall see what they say. Hopefully he can find out something.

Fingers crossed - very little helps.

I'll be back at the vet on Monday (see my new bladder thread about Womble) so will ask Anne about sperm rods then - I even have one to show her, the lucky devil!

I must admit not owning boars (until i got Fin) I had never heard of such things! Luckily when Jenny came over to help with the bonding she told me all about them and gave me a lesson on how to clean Fins special bits rolleyes:)) he hates it and I need to practice more, four hands seem to make the process a bit easier! :))

Pig seems to like it, which to be honest, I find more disturbing. I tell myself it is because I am removing something that is hurting him, and so his "enjoyment" is really relief! Ewwww.

Joe had one when he came home from the vet when he was neutered. Caught both Jenny and me by surprise. He had at least another one in the next couple of days (he was staying with Jenny so I can't be more specific). He's never had them since *touch wood*.

I haven't come across them with any of the other rescue boys.

Sending some love for Patrick. xx>>>

Now that's just wrong..

I'm with you on 'Very' - I have spent a stupid amount of time looking at urine today. Poor Patrick's blood is off the scale he may have 'Internal Cystitis' but to spend his life passing blood seems very wrong!

I hope our vets can come up with something!

Poor little Patrick, i really really hope he gets sorted soon for both of your sakes! Big hugs Jo xx

i have nt had any experience with sperm rods, but we do check their bums and willys every day, as some have had hay stuck up their willys,s o i have had to fish that out, good job i am not squeamish, but i do have a question, would it be obviou to me if they did have a sperm rod? i have seen a pic of one, would i be able to remove it myself?

I have experience of one pig who before he was neutered produce sperm rods ALL the time. It was a nightmare. It was an almost daily occurence. He's been neutered (not long - a few months) and, similarly to flips piggy, he hasn't produced one since. He lives with his two little girlfriends with no problems :)

aww i must be a really bad mummy, i have only ever had boars and i dont even know what a sperm rod is!

:(

Did your pig have any issues passing sperm rod's?

Yeah he did. He couldn't usually pass them on his own. We must have gone about a year just checking and helping them out. He also had problems with calcium deposits, and coupled with the sperm rods he used to get awfully clogged up poor little man! This may well have lead to the one UTI he had, but who knows. He is absolutely fine now, and fingers crossed he will stay that way :)

When you see one, you'll know! I remember the first time my boy had one, and I took him to the vets (must be about five or so years ago) and either the vet didn't know, or was too embarrassed to tell me what it was!

When mimsi had his sperm rods, the vet told me that normaly boars pass these and eat them without the owner knowing. It is something I had never come across and I was shocked when I found the first rods. Perhaps these are the reason for Patricks urine probs and I hope the vet can find out more about this and if neutering would help , then maybe that would be best long term. Any information you find out will be useful and I will keep an eye on this thread.. These were the rods I removed from Mimsi.

Thank you for this information and Angie babes for the picture you took of Mimsi's. I do wonder if neutering has long term benefits.

Golly gosh, i remember that picture. OUCH! Fin certainly doesn't seem to get these...unless he's eaten them before i've seen :)>>> i must admit though he has never even produced any boar glue to date (hopefully i haven't spoken too soon!) and his grease gland is non existent, so perhaps these are two positives for neutering?

The pictures made me gag.

If Henry gets one of those the boy is on his own (well I'd take him to the vets obviously)

I must say since he has been done Henry doesn't smell as bad as he used (the vet always said it was "boy smell") and he seems sleeker and cleaner in general.

I also don't need to de hay his bits any more.

Hope that helps with the discussion

x

I look after my friends un-neutered male when she is on holiday. I removed one of those from his bits and wondered what the hell it was. It really freaked me out I thought it was some kind of worm. I kept my eye on him but never saw another one so I forgot all about it.

Errr what exactly are they?
