Extensive Barbering - Can it cause Problems?

Hey Guys.

I haven't been around much, (exams, boo) but I need advice, again!

I recently aquired a lovely wee himi girl who is ages with my Peruvian babies. She's currently living with Humbug, Emily and baby Allsorts. They're getting on brilliantly - so much so I'm thinking of keeping her.

However, I have noticed that the Peru family have all been getting mysterious haircuts - and I blame the new girl! She didn't do very much at first but over the last week all three perus have had fairly harsh cut backs! I never see any hair lying about the cage but I'm getting concerned that Rosie (the himi) injesting so much hair could be dangerous. Will she cough up hairballs like cats?

I've never caught her doing it, just seen the results. Can anyone tell me more about this strange phenomenon? Is it just over zealous grooming?
 
In all the years that I have kept guinea pigs, I have only had one piggy who did this.

It was recently ... Lottie was the one ... and she was doing it to Lola. I did see her doing it, she grabbed at Lola, pulled the hair out and then ate it. Lottie was pregnant at the time (not to worry you!) and I haven't seen any evidence of it since she had her litter.

It is a strange thing though. I know that other members have experienced this and hopefully you will hear from them also.
 
Some of my pigs in particular will just eat and eat and eat at one another's fur, and I've never had any problems whatsoeevr, apart from my pigs looking a bit daft..Mia has two long strands of hair around her head, and a bald bum!
 
Well Goldie - there is no need to fear about pregancy - the culprit has been revealed, and it isn't little Rosie! Poor girl has been getting the blame when all the while...

It has been Humbug! Naughty daddy pig! Caught him sitting, bold as brass, munching on Allsorts hair. She's getting worse, I'll need to post photos. Hee hee. (Don't worry, Rosie has been throughly aplogised to and hand fed lovely corinader to make up for it.)

So, just bumping this a little as I am worried that Humbug may get problems from ingesting so much hair.
 
I worry about this also, I have 2 boars who have been together since being babys, One is long haired ... well he would be if his buddy let it grow :)) I can only assume it is Nummies that give him a trim? Can i do anything to stop it? aside from the fact that poor Reilly looks like a lion with just his 'mane' left I worry that Nummies has got all this hair in his tummy? He is a lot bigger than Reilly too..!
