Hello there, my guinea pigs are 2 years old. I did a deep clean yesterday and replaced all bedding. Today when I woke up and came to give the piggies veggies I could smell a really bad smell. It turns out that their poop is also black. It is not wet and I haven't changed any part of their diet. They have vegetables twice a day. They have 1/8 cup of pellets each in the morning and have unlimited hay. They have also been drinking quite a lot, maybe more than usual. If anyone here is a rabbit owner, it smells like a rabbit cecotrope but worse. They've been eating fine and still wheek for vegetables. They mean everything to me. Thank you.

I'm sorry I can't help you much with what this could be, I believe usually dark poop means lack of fibre intake, this may be wrong though. I would suggest weighing your pigs weekly to keep track of their health and sometimes this is the first indicator that something is wrong with their health, but don't panic, someone more experienced and with more knowledge will be along shortly 😊

Have you fed any different veggies or perhaps more of one type than usual? I find mine don’t handle broccoli and cauliflower very well

Could they have been scenting? Sometimes my piggies will randomly rumblestrutt which can cause the scenting smell in their cage? I would keep a close eye that the poops don’t become loose and see what they are like tonight. I would definitely see a vet for a check up if you are worried though!

Hi! Please take them off any fresh food for the time being and see a vet promptly if the poos don't improve noticeably within 24 hours, if they get worse or if problems persist/return.
