Hi, thought I could see more white at the edge of my pigs eye yesterday, had a look this evening and it seems the bottom of her eye which should be under the 'lid' is swollen and bulging up over the top of it. Does anyone know what this is? Rush to the vet? Or may something have just irritated her and it's a bit swollen? She is long haired so does have a lot of hair at pound her eye.image.webp

Think I would take her to a vet too. Just to be on the safe side.
Has it come up suddenly or gradually got worse over time?

I have heard of pea eye in guineas. But I'm not sure exactly if its like that.
I would enquire with the vet to see if its painful &ask for metacam or similar painkiller if needed.
Inflammation of the skin&membranes around the eyes can Occur.
Hay poke injuries can also be ruled out if necessary too.

Eyes are very sensitive&things can quickly spiral out of control if not treated correctly quickly.

Keep us updated, I would be interested to find out what it is.
She has a very pretty colouring :)

Healing vibes &hope she gets sorted soon. Xx

Just been thinking, ages ago I read a similar thread on here. But can't remember all the details or who posted it but pea eye is also known as fatty eye I think.

I have been having a skim through &found this on guinea lynx

Not for the faint hearted with eyes. Not major drastically graphic but maybe not what u want to look at over breakfast!

Also ask the vet about inflamed or ulcerated dermoid tissue.
Can be brought on by dusty bedding such as woodbased beddings or dusty low quality hay,Smokey or perfumed atmosphere ,infection a kind of conjunctivitis, could all be contributing factors.

Hopefully&more than likely its just eye drops &tlc
xx

Thank you all for replying. I've looked at the article and it looks like pea eye. Doesn't seem to be bothering her at all. I'll keep very close eye on her and pop her to vets on Monday if there's any change. And thanks for the compliment. She is a rather gorgeous Guinea!

Definitely get it checked. Retrobulbar abscesses (abscess behind eye) can start with the eye bulging and no other symptoms. The eye can be saved if a good antibiotic is given immediately, but sadly if left, the eye often has to be removed to allow drainage of the pus. Hopefully it is pea eye, but please get a guinea pig savvy vet to take a look. I had a piggy here at TEAS who came to me with a retrobulbar abscess, and the original vet had completely dismissed it. Unfortunately it had got too bad by the time she arrived and she had to have her eye removed. She made a good recovery but this could've been avoided with correct diagnosis.
