Hi! One or two days ago I saw a piece of hay in Min's eye. Without actually touching it, I tried to gently wipe my finger over her eye. It was close to coming out when it suddenly disappeared. Today, held her and noticed one eye is clear while the other eye, the one with hay on it, has turned the blue kind of colour with a mild flesh red colour on one tiny part if you lift up a tiny bit. Feeling horrible as my concern lead me to forget I should've waited for it to leave on its own.

Please see a vet promptly! Your piggy has developed an ulcerating eye infection from the stuck hay bit. The sooner you can start treatment, the quicker it will go down again. Eye infections can deteriorate very quickly, but they also tend to heal well if seen promptly and treated promtply. With some antibiotic eye drops and some lubricant it is going to be hopefully be fine again by Christmas if it is only a surface scratch. ;)

Thanks! As it's Saturday tomorrow I can only hope my local vet does walk ins. I'll ring them now to check. Would it be ok until Monday if that's the case? Or no?

Fingers very firmly crossed that you can get an appointment. I know that my vets would never leave an eye injury and would always fit me in.

I really do not think you can leave it until Monday.

Your piggy needs to start treatment ASAP

It may be worth trying another vet if yours can't fit you in

@Claire W Unfortunately this is not my preferred vets :( The one I commonly go to is Taverham, but I'd have to wait more than a few days due to long drive. However, many people on my road said it's good. I've only gone there twice to get one of the piggies nails cut and to get my Nibble pts (rip). My mum was the one on the phone (terrible with them :mal:) but not sure how much she said in detail. Would it be worth attempting to flush it out for now?

Edit: This one is the one I've gone to twice Veterinarians in Lowestoft, Suffolk | The Veterinary Hospital

To be honest, I wouldn't flush it out unless you know what you're doing as you could make things worse.

In this situation, any vet is better than no vet and all vets are able to diagnose and prescribe treatment for eye injuries :)

Your vet should stain the eye with a special dye which will show up any debris in the eye and ulcers.

A suitable eye drop / ointment will then be prescribed x

Thanks :) Vet said she may be developing cataracts and going blind, possibly related to age. There was also bleeding when you pull down the lower lid and vet suggested she may have ran into hay because of vision. Been given some eye drops. I'm worried and feel bad she's going through this, but feel better knowing it's not life threatening

Thanks :) I put one drop in but found it was hard to drop one on the area that shows when you pull up. I found it just went more on the center or little bit above center when I tried. Sorry if I'm not making much sense !

The eye drops just need to be dropped onto the actual eye ball then gently close and open the lid to mix it around. As long as it goes in, don't worry!

Oh thank you! This is so helpful. I thought it had to be done with precise movements and was cringing every time I saw it didn't go on right :D
